Long overdue - should have been May 17. Assuming yours has the 2.2 engine with DPF then your oil will be contaminated with diesel . Still overdue even if it is the 2.4 model!

I always struggle with this. OP's motor has done +/- 7000 miles since the last service, but is say 4 months over the standard 12 month service interval. Another vehicle could have done 20,000 miles in 12 months. So the oil in the 20k motor will have done close to 3 times the mileage.
Am I correct in thinking that the DPF regen process is dependant on the number of stop start journeys and a vehicle that does more long distance trips will thus see fewer regens? If so, on this basis the 20k motor may have suffered less oil dilution than a 7k motor that has been used for short distances. But who knows. Is the service warning symbol linked to an oil monitoring probe? Sure I've read other posts where folks have complained it has appeared within a few months of an oil change. But again, someone could have reset the warning symbol on the OP's Defender prior to him acquiring it. If it had been reset without an oil change, how long before the electronic wizardry senses the diluted oil again and throws up the service symbol again? Anyway enough of my rambling. My advice would be to give it an A service ASAP. It's pretty straight forward and you could do it yourself. For peace of mind, if you plan to keep the motor for some time , I would actually drop all the oils and replace with quality fresh so you know it's been done properly. There are some good posts/guides on here as to what grades of oil to use and how to do the job. From my experience, trickiest is the main gearbox as the exact amount of oil has to be added and getting the oil into the gearbox is tricky due to the location of the filler plug. But again some good suggestions on here as to how to do this using a variety of methods. And messiest is removing the engine oil filter housing. (especially if done outside in the wind whilst crawling under the chassis ). |

More justification above^^^. My comment was based on the usual 12 months /12000 miles service recommendation from Landrover, and the use of a service light on the 2.2 which can indicate a need for an oil change even before this time/ mileage. This is because the DPF regeneration injects more diesel into the engine to increase the temperature in the DPF and contaminates the engine oil. Probably more complicated than that, but if you have purchased a Defender with any ambiguity over its service history, then best to be safe and change the oils.
