That Airfield has a very interesting website with some interesting WW11 info on it relative to the airfield. Checked it out as I'm interested in that stuff. Pickles.
There was a german bomber pilot who visited the airfield after the war as he flew 4 missions to bomb it and they couldnt find it each time as they painted the runway to match the moorland ... Also when they first opened the museum they did an airfield tour on a milk float (long story ...but ...) we were sitting lon the float gong round the sites listening to the people chatting about the aircraft that were left there after the war and what happened to them, how they would like to know if there was any hidden treasure ... one of the older gents said that there were about 10 aircraft buried in the woods at the end of the runway ... as he was paid to bury them with his digger !! so lots of history there and lots to see if you take the time to look around .. star trail photos, murmurations from the evening starlings coming in to roost, all the airfield is open to list and wander all over - so worth a list when you come over next pickles!! We were fortunate to go to Iceland again, so plenty of scenery
This is fellow member Peter Td4, with whom we had the honour and luck to spend some good times, doing the Defender thing on the F910 heading east from Askja: Click image to enlarge this is him just a bit earlier: Click image to enlarge Here's our Antares, if I'm not mistaken on the F26 / Sprengisandurleid on our way to Nyidalur. Click image to enlarge It looks very nice and calm, but we had been driving through a fierce wind. I had to open the door using both hands. From Nyidalur, we spent 10 hours driving the 120 km of the northern part of the F910 to Askja. This is about two hours from Askja: Click image to enlarge Greetings, Joris |
