Engine type on VIN number
Had a look at the VIN number of my 02 MY DEFENDER, normally a TD5 engine would be shown as the number 8 on the Vin code (also the 8th character along the VIN code) my VIN shows a number 5 which does not match with any Landrover engines on the VIN decoders, any ideas why this is, it certainly looks like a 15P TD5 engine!

DV= DEF 90

vin pos 6 body type A= 2 door pick up , HT

vin pos 7 engine type

vin pos 8 Gear box type 7 = 5 speed Manual i.e. R380

Certainly looks like a 15P TD5 engine! 2002 defender will fitted with 15P engine at LR

Try taking the acoustic cover off to see if you still have a paper label on top of the engine. Mine's still there and it will definitively give you the engine type.

Or engine number is on the left hand side of the engine (turbo side) about half way along the block below the exhaust manufold. It's almost inline (just infornt) with the pipe from the breather from the rocker cover to the turbo inlet hose. It's about halfway down the block.

Hpi check should give you engine number and it tells you if it's 15p at least the total car check app I use does. This was you don't even need to get up lol
