I recently noticed that my rear wheel was leaking grease. Upon removing the wheel all the bolts on the drive member were broken off. What could have caused this?

I like to check these every 20,000km, as they can work loose. I have found them to remain tight if I have spring washers under the bolt heads. Important to torque them up using a tension wrench to avoid overtightening & stretching of the threads.

Worth bearing in mind that these are supposed to be grade 10.9 HT, not the more common 8.8 HT. If someone has at some time replaced the original bolts with 8.8s, it might explain your situation.

The easy solution:-
Click image to enlarge Socket head caps, which are grade 10.9 as standard, with spring washers not thread lock, and in holes that are scrupulously clean. |
