2003 Defender 90 Td5 XS CSW Bonatti Grey
Fuel Pump cut out
I am thinking of fitting a cut out on my fuel pump. 90 TD5 xs 2003 model. Does anyone know if I can acces the wires from under the drivers seat box where the ECU is. If so, anyone know what colour wire to disconnect and extend. Thanks in advance. Regards

it's a yellow relay under the drivers seat, pull each one and see which one stops the fuel pump. I can't remember the colour of the worse sorry.
Worth checking if yours is like mine, as mine will run, be it poorly without the fuel pump!
You could always cut power to the main relay or ecu 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)
2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r

That sounds interesting. Do you think the engine is pulling the fuel through? Not sure if I would be doing any damage to the ECU if I cut the power whilst it was moving. When you said cut the power to the main relay, did you mean the relay that supplies the fuel pump? Regards

There is dedicated fuse for the fuel pump. So no need to pull the relay in first. And for info - TD5 runs also without power for the fuel pump, but not very good. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

If that is so, then how can you safely stop the engine remotely without damaging the ECU or anything else for that matter. Is it possible to interrupt the ignition for example? Regards

Look into RAVE - main power for engine ECU is controlled by a relay and this relay is controlled by the engine ECU. If you switch the ignition of, ECU shuts off the injectors and approx. 7 sec later shuts of its main relay. Fuel pump relay is also controlled by the engine ECU.
In RAVE there are full schematics and description, how it works. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

You also have the option of using the "inertia switch" feed. This switch is mounted on the bulkhead and is designed to kill the engine gracefully in the event of a heavy impact. It's not difficult to add additional switches into the same circuit. I use this for FIA battery cutout switches, even better, one side is connected to the ignition so you can use the same wire for the alternator resistor on the cutout switch. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Thanks MadTom and davew. I would like to access under drivers seat as I can feed from the battery easier than to the dash (I think) but I do like your idea davew. I didn't know it had kill switch, is it in the engine compartment or behind the dash on the bulkhead? What does it look like? Regards

Top of the kill switch is black round rubber. This switch is made for emergency kill of the fuel pump, in case of car turns over. It is standard in all cars with electrical fuel pump. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile
