How do I change the door locks?
How do I change the door locks?

I want to change all my door locks as the rear door lock is different from the fronts and I don't have a key for it, so its always to be unlocked from inside the vehicle.

I've bought a set of locks from SP but before charging in I thought I'd ask for advice.

PS Still loving it!

Michael

Remove door card and peel back water shedder to expose inside of door handle. Using pliers and a thin-ish screwdriver, tease off the spring clip that holds the activation bar to the cam lever on the end of the lock. Remove the screw from the centre of the back of the lock barrel and it will slide out towards the outside.

Reverse the procedure to install the new lock barrel.

Sounds convoluted but will become obvious when you can see it. Darren

Getting the window winder off can be the trickiest bit, you need to get in there with a small flat head screwdriver and prise off the cir-clip so the winder handle slides off... I didn't find it too difficult, but others have had a nightmare getting the winder off...

Any you might need to replace a few of the door-card fixings as they break easily

I always use a small piece of cloth to remove the circlip from the wider handles - I slip it between the handle and the door card and pull it in a sawing motion and the clip always pops off easily. No risk of scratches using this method. See here:

While that's a good tip on modern cars. On a Defender you can just push on the door card a bit and there is enough room to poke a screw driver or pen in there to push the clip off.

What i will recommend though is buying new water shedders if you're going in there. They're not expensive and they almost always either tear when you take them out or don't seal properly when you put them back. That's if you don't find someone has already been in there and torn huge holes in it.

A couple of Butyl sound deadening pads stuck to the inside of the door skin also make a massive difference.

I can vouch for that. I installed some in my recently fitted new drivers door and the difference is amazing. It shuts with a very satisfying thud!
