I believe go outdoors do have a fair range and are usually ok on price - I fact I think they price match.
As to which one not sure but i'm sure a quick look at the range and you'll instinctively know which one. Chances are if there's stuff on you don't know what it's for you don't need it  |

I have had a Swiss Army Champ for 28 years now and recently bought a high spec Leatherman from the U.S, thinking it would be much better. Whilst it's a very useful tool, and extremely well made, I still find myself carrying and using the Champ far more. It's just handier somehow.
You also don't have the problem of fixed blade carrying with a Champ - i've even had it given back to me at Heathrow security when I inadvertently had it in my hand luggage. Pretty sure if it had a locking blade they wouldn't have been so forthcoming. |

Bought a Leatherman from Costco for circa 30 quid some time ago. Also came with a separate folding knife.
I think it is the 'Wave" model. Been camping and canoeing for years and never used it once. I carry a small kitchen knife for cooking |

I think that 'best' is very subjective and 'best for camping' even more so. However, my tool of choice is an original Leatherman PST that I've had for over twenty years. It's slim and inconspicuous on my belt in the office. For more casual and outdoor use I also have a Leatherman Charge, which is superb but more bulky. Rarely does a day go by without needing them for something or other. Darren

I use a leatherman charge tti every day at work and find it very useful. If I had to pick one for camping I would be looking at the new Signal as it has many good looking features. http://www.leatherman.co.uk/signal/439.html#start=28

A few pictures may help... Swiss Army The most useful one I own is the simplest,... Knife, Bottle Openers, Cork Screw, two screw driver blades and a 'piercing' tool. The Blade Locks open...(essential IMO and more common now) this knife is around 30 years old and still great. Smaller and more Complicated versions are never used in my experience.  Click image to enlarge Leatherman Well made and this one is now 25years old, I have the Wave attachment Tool that allows it to be converted to accept Hex Drive Tool Bits. Old now but still a good Tool and has been used throughout its life, always packed just in case. Hmm, I've had two of those Gerbers. On the first the main blade snapped off and the second the nib of the smaller screw driver disintegrated. At the time I couldn't find replacement parts so I got the second bigger Leatherman. Darren

Thanks for the input. I went for the surge in the end, but only because it was what was available at my local go outdoors. It's very big and bulky!!
I am not too sure I will get along with it to be honest but it will serve its purpose on this trip. Its plus points are its downfall. It is well built and looks like it would survive a nuclear blast...therefore a proper tool, but I don't want a proper tool when away from home. I want a convenient pocket knife/multitool which is small and compact. In other words my Swiss Army. knife. Also, the bottle opener is rubbish!! It feels like it belongs in the garage as the pliers are the best I've ever owned  2002 110 td5 |

I've got an old Gerber - but for all camping trips now I take an Opinel No 8 - a great tool (although I managed to cut my finger open in Czech Republic this year for the first time!)

They are a nice size when folded ,the spring keeps the pliers open so nice to use one handed ,all tools lock

This is my Leatherman OHT, "one handed tool". You can, with practice open all the locking blades/tools with one hand, including the pliers, which are amongst the best I've seen with a replaceable wire cutter blade. Only problem I've had is that I snapped off the tip of the plain knife blade (my fault!), haven't got round to replacing it yet.

Which is always in my pocket, the non locking blades means it's legal to carry in the UK, whereas, strictly, locking blade knives are not.
