I used Sikaflex 291i over the foam seal and it seems to have worked well. It doesn't look too obvious and has definitely reduced the amount of water in the footwell. At the same time I put a dob of it behind the windscreen brackets just to reduce the chances of water coming in through the bolt holes.

I think most defenders now have had some sort of sealant, mine I think is going to need some for the door seals, water seems to like to come through behind, at the tops of the doors. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Even my Puma leaked here from almost new but a neat little run of silicon did the trick and you dont notice unless you actually look for it.

Was tbinking of prising the window frame up slightly and cutting a notch in the new foam seal where the bulkhead lugs are so no need to liftthe roof and windscreen up too much, then pressing home with some sealant, bit lazy but...

Wouldn't recommend prising the windscreen up. If you start disturbing seals then you are likely to get more leaks elsewhere. I used Captain Tollies creeping crack cure on mine. Worked, otherwise I was going to use black sealant along the joint.

Another thought would be to extract the existing perishing seal, seal and slide in the new seal then seal again

I do not think you could do that at the new seal is very soft, more like sponge rubber. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Thanks for your advice, I have finished fitting new vent foam seal
with a touch of silicone as back up, new stainless hinge pins, new bulkhead to windscreen hinges. A rub down and paint and I am quite pleased. Well living in Manchester, this may be optimistic, just need some warm weather to test. Only worry is that the seals hold and do their job. Click image to enlarge |

Just wondered the reason for not going there, was it a problem trying to realign the new brackets? |

No the job itself was really easy just that one thing seems to lead to another and whilst I was tinkering I was slowly damaging the surrounding paint, which had just been resprayed. It seems I am totally incapable of just sticking to one job at a time.

Thanks, early signs of water ingress though. Drivers side water dripping onto the floor...not sure where to go with this one yet. It all looks well sealed up. Hmmm

Could it be the door seal?
Sometimes they have a tendency to allow water in and it travels along the door stay and drips onto the foot well For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |
