Well, those of you who folowed my trials and tribulations last year, after buying the 110, will know that I came close to selling the 110 due to my wife's abject hate of the ride in it.
Luckily, the snow came, and she changed her mind a bit! Also I fitted a set of Bilsteins all round, which massively improved the ride and jitteryness. Still wasn't quite happy with the ride at the back, and spoke at length to Colin to Extreme 4x4, who spent a long time ascertaining what I wanted, what I used the 110 for, what loads I carry etc. The result, some four weeks (not two as they initially promised) later, was a set of rear springs that complete the transformation! So, for those of you with 110s (particularly USWs like mine), who feel you can't live with the choppy, bouncy ride (mainly due to the sh*tty LR shocks fitted as standard), I propose a solution (at a fraction of the cost some companies offer). Of course, this setup won't suit everyone - If you carry VERY heavy loads in the back, or do extreme off-roading. But then, if you do these things, you've probably changed the springs anyway! My use (and probably I imagine the same for a lot of you) is 90% on-road (of which 15% is spent towing a trailer), 10% off-road. Plus, I don't usually carry more than 100kg in the back of my USW. So, if you're unhappy with the factory ride, my solution: 1 x set of 4 Bilstein shocks - Approx. £350 (Try MM4x4) 1 x set of 'custom spec' springs from Extreme 4x4 - these are approx 330lbs, and are approx. 10mm shorter than the standard LR brown/purple springs. 110 still sits very slightly higher at the back, but not as much as standard. Approx. £170pr (not cheap, but good quality). Mention James with the USW who just got a set, and they should know the spec. Ride is transformed, even without touching the front springs. More supple, less bouncy, less jarring, smoother all round. I will probably beef up the rear anti-roll bar, to offer even more stability when towing, and sharpen up the handling. Just my 0.02p's worth - May be of help to someone. 2010 110 XS USW (the slow one) 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ (the fast one) 2005 Ducati ST3 1954 Sunbeam S8 |

James, great write-up. Did your USW come with a ARB from the factory? I didn't think 110's came with a ARB as standard? It's the 110 USW Puma I'm thinking of buying, and I have noticed the ride is not as stable/poised as my (non-ACE, coil sprung) Discovery TD5... I had assumed that retro-fitting a ARB would be a real benefit... |

Cheers,
Yes, my 110 came with ARBs front and rear, from the factory. Think they now come with them as standard, on all but the base model (for which they are part of the security pack IIRC). Think the standard ARBs are around 19mm, and uprated ones all seem to be approx. 25mm. And yes, will do a further write-up once the springs have all settled down, and I've tried towing.
