You can get a new single mudflap with bracket for under £20 off Ebay.
Those bits of thread sticking out are probably the remains of the broken M6 bolts that held the original mudflap in place. Those bolts are screwed into 'rivnut" threaded inserts. If you are lucky, you will be able to grab the end of the threads with a vise-grip then turn the old bolt shank out. If the old bolts are seized in then the best thing to do is to drift the old rivnuts through into the chassis and install new inserts before installing the mudflap. Regards Dave's not here man... |

So how would you install the new insert ?
Is this an insert in M6 I'd need ? Do they just tap in? http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/RIVNUTS-NUTSERTS-R...1388153801 |

Yes, those are the nutserts (rivnuts)
You can set them with a tool, just like a pop riveter, like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-8mm-THREADED-R...xyldpR~66a Dave's not here man... |

I've done M6's, 8's and even 10's following this You Tube tip.
Wouldn't want to do too many 10's though but fine for smaller sizes. |

Drill it out and replace with a nut and bolt.

they are soft enough to punch into the chassis with a hammer and punch, much easier than drilling upside down and don't damage the hole; real easy one tap too.
Also the outriggers have a hole just big enough to get your hand inside to retrieve. I used stainless bolts, penny washers and a nut. Reached inside dropped the bolt down a penny washer; and then washer on the other side and nipped up with a tiny socket. It then left a stainless stud that I could attach the mud flap bracket. The nut and washer left enough clearance to stop the bracket deforming on the shape of the out rigger. Also the air gap means I can flush any mud out when I wash it. Saves holding moisture between the metal surfaces. The length of tud was protected by the bracket so not hanging down. Also I didn't have the right rivnuts but loads of stainless nuts and bolts. Also painted the outrigger while at it and fitted then galvanised mudflaps. Looked far better than some rusted out hanging down flaps.... |

I keep looking at the state of my mudflaps and associated 22 year old bracketry and am seriously contemplating the Gynn Lewis mud flap kits with the extra bits that protect the chassis and outriggers/rear crossmember better. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.
