anyway the white roof is growing on me but the wheels they have to go .. Question is whats best option to go for alloys or steels, colour thoughts suggestions? I want to be able to do some offroading and plan and wanted some chunky tyres like BFG AT's. Should i be looking at 7.5" or 8" wide wheels im really struggling as no idea when it comes to wheels and tyres etc

Hi, congratulations on your first Defender, it looks a tidy original example, classic white roof!
You're bound to get loads of different opinions to the wheel/tyre question. My opinion, for what it's worth: Stick with original fitment Landrover wheels. Either "Boost" alloys, only in silver, 7" wide. Or "Wolf" heavy duty steel rims, best in white, 6.5" wide, see the thread on here for pictures. Both these wheels look right on any classic style Defender. There's no need for anything wider than 7", tyres that need wider rims will not be a better overall compromise than 235/85/16 size. Tyre choice really depends what you're going to use it for. If it's a daily driver, spending most of it's time on the road, then a reputable brand AT is best. If it's a weekend plaything, spending more time off-road, and you can live with the extra noise, fuel consumption, and reduced wet/icy weather performance (on road) then MT will go further. Driver skill is as important as tyre choice, maybe more so. Learn to drive it and enjoy it as it is, upgrade later. |

Yep its a 52plate 171k but it's clean and tidy and seems very original and not a been messed with. I bought it to do some green Laning etc as well as no more that 5k a year road miles but mud tyres concern me in the wet so all terian's with a meaty tread are desired.
I quite like the boost alloys the sawtooth ones also look nice but interesting what you saw about keeping it classic. I want to do it up a little but keeping it classic . Wheels are top of list then maybe a medium window tints on back but I'm undecided on that. Oh how wide are the current steels btw? |

My personal favourite LR wheel for a Defender would be the Freestyle alloy. Looks modern but classic at the same time.

Those freestyle ones are nice too are they genuine landroverover too? The steels I don't like much.

Yes they are. I am sure an expert can say exactly what model they were fitted to, but I think 300tdi and TD5 Defenders? You see a lot of Disco 1s with them too.

If I find a good deal on some genuine boost alloys from a newer defender are they all the same ie say they came of a 2012 car ?

P.S. - I note you said it was your first Defender, one is never enough and you'll soon find a second one on your driveway

Remember you'll also need alloy wheel nuts. Buying these new works out expensive, but there are loads about secondhand. Wheel nuts from a scrapped tdi Discovery can be had for £1 or £2 each. Don't buy nuts from a td5 Disco, they're different. A year ago you couldn't give away practically new boosts, there were loads about. All the 'bling' defenders were taking off boosts, there's bound to be some still about, so don't buy scruffy or corroded wheels. £50 - £60 per rim was the going rate. |
