Thanks Mo, I take it it's to preheat the engine for cold starts? I can't see any controls for that.

From what I understand, you plug it in to the mains and it should start warming the coolant as it pumps it it around.. In the winter you'll have a warm engine and instant hot air coming out the vents.

It's a Kenlowe Hotstart.
Basically you could plug it into the mains and it pre heated the coolant. So that you got better fuel efficiency and a working heater (as well as a Defender heater works anyway) as soon as you got in on a cold morning. They're also used in very cold climates to get the engine to start more easily. I think i read on the mudstuff blog that motels in the cold bits of Canada actually have power points in the carpark to leave your car plugged in over night, so the oil doesn't turn to treacle and the antifreeze doesn't turn into a slush puppy. Obviously not as versatile as a fuel burning heater, which is why they don't really sell them in the UK anymore. I don't think they have any controls, you just plug them in and it has it's own thermostat set to what ever. |

Thanks everyone that really does clear it up. It also answers the question of what to do with it, I'm pretty sure it's been installed for a while and never maintained, I don't think I'll ever use it. It's coming out!
