Post a picture up of the gap if you can - this will help us tell you if it is normal or not. Mine has uneven gaps everywhere - I would say it is probably normal and I doubt it will get larger. If the paint flaking off is the small grill under the main plastic grill then the paint there does flake off - mine did and my dealer resprayed it under warranty. Bob |

I had the same thing on the rear door of my 110, which is 8 months old.
I loosened the bolts on the door frame (and lock striker plate), and moved the door around a little to even out the gap. Just standard Defender build tolerances, I think - You know the joke about the Toyota and the cat, I presume?

i've got gaps and poorly aligned panels aplenty. i'd say that's "normal".

paint flaking off the the lower grill is common,they paint staight onto the ally mesh which without a base coat corrodes with the road salt and comes off.your warranty will cover it 2.4 90 XS

Something does not look right there. Looking at the picture you appear to have some sort of filler strip between the two panels. Just checked mine, a 2009 model, and there is nothing like that fitted. A wild guess but it looks like somebody was trying to hide something. I would get a dealer to sort it out. Bob |

That is not normal John. Ours does not have that strip. The gap there is not right. Off to the dealers - any problems give LR HQ a ring.

The extra bit that you see on the lower panel goes inside behind the upper panel. It is an overlap between the two panels. I have seen this before. If you run your fingers along the roof gutter above this you will feel a dip or a rise depending on which way you run your fingers. The part of the roof gutter over the back windows will be slightly higher than the gutter over the front doors. The reason for this is that the body over the top panel in your photo will be slightly higher (by the width of the gap in your photo) than it should be. The only way to rectify this is by major surgery. If you are happy with your Defender and this is the only fault you have I would leave it be. Getting someone to take the roof and panels off to make them fit then reassembling it correctly could cause bigger problems in the long run.I have seen this type of thing before. It will stay as it is so my advice is to live with it. I gaurantee you that if you check this join on any Defender the passenger and the driver sides will not be the same. You dealer will tell you that it has to go to the body shop and you are depending on them to strip, repair, reassemble, reseal and not muck up your interior while doing it. My two sides are not 100% the same but so long as everything else o.k is I am happy. Your choice but apart from the visual aspect of things it will be o.k. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

That gap to the left at the point of the door, where the two body panels are fitted together, looks huge. Biggest I have seen. Mine is around 2mm thick or looking at the rivets about the size of the center hole in the rivet.
I would get it repaired as it looks like it could fill up with muck, water etc...... |

Just to reiterate....I am talking about the gap between the two panels to the right of the door not the door to panel gap. (i.e. where it looks like you can stick your finger into the square hole) |

I took a pic of mine (will upload when I'm not so hectic) but as said above, the flange normally fits behind the rear panel.
Mine is out by about the same amount. It's what they use to adjust the tolerances. You could get it changed but it's a big job so you'd want to trust the people doing it and you could get back something which is wrong in a different way. If it isn't leaking then I'd just leave it.
