This morning I decided to do the airbox modify. This entailing about 30mn work. Remove airbox lid, filter, inlet pipe (most difficult part), take out fan thing and put to trash and cut off the excess tube in the box. Put back filter and then lid.
I am very suprised at the difference this has made. I did not expect to feel any difference but it is like a remap. Perhaps there was something particular wrong with mine before - the difference should not be so extreme. Much more smoothing rev and engine at lower. Pulling away from idle much smoother. Perhaps faster. I think this is an essential modify. |

I've been toying with the idea of doing this, as everyone says it improves airflow. I just can't get out of my head that the fan/moisture trap must have been put there for a reason, so removing it concerns me?!?! guess it depends what you use it for , if you go wading or splashing through deep fords might be an issue but otherwise I wouldn't worry, DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Yes it is sure this is the next stage. I can not see that the original pipe to the side vent is at all acceptable. It is so much flat and restricted. Engines need more air than this. Gone too is question of water with this arrangement.
What wheels is that there mr blackwolf? |

HI Gents,
Can someone please explain this mod as I don't recall reading about it, what exactly is involved to do as it sounds like only the fan needs to be removed and does it improve performance by removing the (fan) restriction ?? As Blackwolf said, with a RAI the pipe between the air intake to airbox is larger so could this be an option ?? Thanks, Mark |

Two options;
1) Removal of existing pipework, disposing of the rain separator inc replacement of existing pipework to be replaced with larger bore aftermarket. 2) Removal of existing pipework, remove rain separator, seal and replace. This is what I have done, no issues and is an improvement purely with the rain separator removed. I would have ideally gone with option 1 but at the time due to costs I used existing pipework. I may at some point remove my Safari and do option 1. However, I've had no issues and have been very happy with option 1 so I don't have great intention of swapping it any time soon. On testing recently, it was proven give or take very very marginally there is no increase (or very little increase) of Crankcase pressure. With fitting a RAI. Providing the rain separator is removed, and with existing pipework used. I have had no issue, however although I have a fully sealed Safari snorkel I have no intention of wading in very deep water. So the drain hole in the air box base I have not sealed. If I wanted to I could and of course would have a fully waterproofed intake. However, if you did seal it and any wet got in from rain for example you would could create a drain with no outlet except into the air filter and beyond! Thuse creating your own water trap.
