Essentially, yes to both. I've seen wading plugs replaced with clear pipe breathers that allows any oil build up to be seen.
It's a double-edged sword though - if you are a serious off-roader then a breather from the bottom of the bell housing can be rather vulnerable.
Personally, I'd just fit and remove as necessary. It doesn't need to be every five minutes, though. You could, for example, fit at the beginning of a two week trip and remove afterwards. Darren
