I don't think you'll get agreement on this question, those of us with 2.4 will prbably say 2.4, and those with 2.2 will say 2.2!
In reality there is very little difference and each has pros and cons. I would suggest driving each to see if you have a preference, and (since there is so little difference) looking for the best vehicle and the vehicle which best suits your requirements in your price range and not worrying whether it is 2.2 or 2.4. The Puma features which are most annoying (like the all-or-nothing heater, the corrosion, the leaks and draughts, the output adaptor shaft, the high theft incidence, etc) are the same on both. I prefer the 2.4 because it doesn't have the variable volume oil pump, doesn't have a DPF, and if you are so inclined can be decatted and de-EGRed; others prefer the 2.2 because it is quiter and a little more refined. Try both, they're both epic! Oh, and there will be many people who tell you to keep the TD5 because it was the "last proper Landrover engine" and the Puma "is just a transit", but similar things have been said with every revision of Landrover! |

^^ As above really. I bought the 2.2 as wanting the newest lowest mileage I could afford as it is a keeper. But it was an uneducated buy, so not sure if I would do the same again. That said I am very happy with the 2.2 but can only compare it to old TDi Defender not the 2.4 TDci.
The 2.2 is cheaper on road tax because of the DPF, £230 compared to £500 (I think). Like above I think price, condition and mileage would be more of a decider. The 2.2 I drove was more refined, but my 2.4 seemed to have a bit more grunt,and makes you more popular with the ladies. (made that last bit up) Wes Oh woe, oh woe My crusty old landrover, It will not go. |

The road tax on my 2010 2.4 Tdci SW is £230 as is SWMBOs 2010 90 2.4 Tdci soft top. 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black. |

I bought the last of the 2.4's just because I didn't want to get a new model with potential call backs to sort. But now we're down the line a bit I think it'd be down to individual cars, either 2.2 or 2.4, as to which you'd buy. All cars should have been shaken out by now and have history to consider.

the 2.2 is a much smoother more refined engine giving the same performance as a 2.4.
However i went for the 2.4 as it lacks a DPF and seeing as i don't often do longer trips that's a plus for me. Road tax depends on whether the vehicle you buy is registered as a commercial vehicle or a car. Any kind of pick-up, Utility station wagon, or van will be a commercial regardless of age and have the cheaper road tax. If you have a station wagon with windows and seats all round then it just depends on what it was registered as. Later 2.2's were all registered as commercials so got put in the cheaper tax band. However it's not because of the engine, it's just because it's registered as a commercial. |

just recently changed from a 2.4 to a 2.2 after 10 yrs and feel that the 2.2 needs more gear changes on the lower speeds to keep in the power band,
However I had a BAS remap on the 2.4 that was awesome so that may have been the reason that is pulled so well from low speeds in a higher gears. I dont notice any less noise as the 2.2 has no carpets in (as per the XS spec of that time) and the 2.4 was full carpeted, the 2.2 I have has very noisy wranglers MTR and the 2.4 had BFG’s, ATR’s - so that is a big difference too. Its probably going to boil down to your financial bracket, and the choice of having a newer vehicle (2.2) compared to an older one (2.4). For me - I have had S2, S3, TDI-300, TD5, 2.4 TDCI and now the 2.2 TDCI - a natural progression - and so far the 2.4 has been the best vehicle I have owned, but after only 2 months with the 2.2I am not yet able to make a valid Judgment, Its different, newer and shiny, has different tyres, roof rack, internal set up and no remap - so Ive got to live with it a while yet to get to know the vehicle and will let you know. I'm on my second 2.2. Love the engine.
The guy who sold me the 130 also had a 2.4 (albeit a 110). Said he noticed no real difference. |

I have one and drove both and the 2.2 has an intake noise at the wing which is annoying when the window is open but for me CC=cubes count.

Thanks Guys for your feedback, it seems much a muchness and will go on vehicle condition rather than cubic capacity Working towards Carry on camping!
