Yeah I just chucked them on to see if it works, will obviously tie them up out of the way before taking it out for a spin Matt.

After what started out as a simple head gasket replacement nearly 2 months ago, we took her out for a spin around the block. The new engine seems to have a lot more poke than the old one and is quieter as well. It pulls very well with absolutely no smoke which is surprising for an engine that's been sat for a couple of years.

Great outcome there with the engine at least the "new " rattles should be easier to sort out 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

Normally the case, you don't always know what the story was with the old engine that was dropped in. It could have been bodged up and just dropped in to sell on. When you fixed the head gasket it, you may have un earthed more problems. When we did the head gasket on my rover metro last year, what should have been a simple fix as people said, turned into a major, major nightmare. I ended up un earthing problems after problems. At the end I just cut my losses and got shot, when it decided to jump into gear when I started the engine. Starting to wonder if the rattles aren't new but seem more audible now as the new engine is quieter and smoother. Turned out to be an absolute bargain, picked the engine up for £50 as spares or repairs, bit of a gamble but definitely paid off! Was also a pleasant surprise to find out the previous owner put new recon g/box and t/box on less than 4000 miles ago.
Got my side steps on this evening, passenger side was easy, used the sticky DIY rivnut tool thread to help with the rivnut bit. Driver's side however was an absolute sod to get on, managed to drop the fuel tank just enough to contort my hands through the tiny gap and somehow get a ring spanner on the nut. Had a fantastic day at the Kelmarsh LR show. Always enjoy a good look around the 2nd hand stalls for little gems, this time I managed to pick up a Td5 clutch assembly with a clutch spring assist so hoping for a lighter clutch. Got a new gear lever and knob with proper threads for the knob to screw into so it doesn't twist and turn. Picked up one of those pesky seat recliner lever caps, had one missing for ages but didn't want to pay a fiver for a new one. Finally I got a pair of retro heritage badges for a bargain of £25! Admittedly they're not Artmin but at less than half the price I'm extremely pleased! I opted for the safer option of putting rivets in the holes and sticking the badge on with double sided tape. Removing the green oval and 3D lettering I applied last year was a bit of a pain - I was very worried about damaging the paintwork and in the end I did end up pulling a bit of paint off with the badge but it will be covered by the new one. Thanks I'm really pleased with them.
Today I swapped the clutch pedal assembly, or at least tried. Swapping the pedals was surprisingly easy - 6 bolts and then a bit of wiggling to squeeze it through the bulkhead. The problem came when we tried to bleed it. It sort of dribbled out a bit but no bubbles, no pressure and the pedal had no resistance. After a while trying to bleed with no change, we came to the conclusion that the master cylinder is knackered. Is this a reasonable conclusion? Can I just swap over my old master cylinder?
