Result, NFU have come up trumps Thumbs Up . Due to it being a truck back (solid sides) they have got Commercial Insurance, £30 cheaper than the original renewal quote with 2 named drivers (didn't have that before).
Now road legal again, that was the longest 4 hours of my life being without it (last ins ran out midday today Smile )

I have had an interesting few days.

I want to use the Defender more. Particularly for long distance camping trips.

I was currently insured with Footman James placed with Aegeas. A classic policy with a limit of 7000 miles. I think I will need more like 7 to 10000 miles. So phoned them. They won't offer me 10000. Only for vehicles over 30 years old ( mine is 22).

Ok then I will go elsewhere. I know as my vehicle is modified ( mainly auto gearbox conversion) it will take a few Enquiries but this was on another level.
I tried A plan and Adrian Flux first and found their quotes were for very big numbers. So I carried on and tried Heritage. This is where it got interesting. They list they have a modified policy for all Land Rovers. Once you get all through the quote process they say oh it has more than seven seats we can't cover you. It has to be more than five years old. So unless you have an 2006 to 2010 110 station wagon don't bother calling.
I then tried Prestige after comments on here that others had used them. And i have used before on my wife's MGF. They were happy with gearbox mod and I got a price of £295 from them. I went back to go through the mods again. I had already said it has 9 seats which they accepted. I explained that this was because the gearbox mod had resulted in front central seat being removed. Seat removal was red flagged on their options list so they could not now cover me.
I tried a couple of the Markerstudy companies. Got the same answer that they did not cover more than seven seat vehicles due to the possibility of a larger number personal injury claims originating from the vehicle.

Meanwhile I had been in touch with my local NFU branch and spoke with Sharon there several times. After busy times and computer systems being down we got quotes together. It is more than I was paying before but is for the cover I need and I will earn NCB on this policy. So another tick here for NFU.

I've always been happy with, and pleased to recommend, Saga. I travel abroad frequently, and a plus is that their comprehensive cover extends to the EU - until 00:00 Brussels time 30 March 2019*, but that's a different subject - for 365 days/year. No green cards faffing about advising them of my trips...

But, of course, a couple of days ago they upped my renewal quote by over 30%, from last year's £264.99 to a whopping £347.38.

NFU responded to my mailed enquiry, after a bit of research (couldn't find the vehicle, couldn't find my Driving Licence on their databases) finally came up with a figure of £898. Really?

Back to the meerkats and singing wops, through confused I got a guote from Liverpool Victoria of £205.45.

Seemed to good to be true, but 'phoning them confirmed that the policy had everything I needed. Fully comp EU cover restricted to 180 days as standard, but that'll do me, I alternate vehicles so won't be using it abroad for anywhere near that length of time.
