The Entreq version also looks very nice, no bent pipe work either.

Only the Nak, as far as I know, includes a large-bore replacement for the extraordinarily constricted and leaky pipe from the wing aperture to the air box. Yes, you can fit a Nugget Duct at still further cost, but you don't need to with the Nak.
The performance improvement is surprising.. |

Following this with interest as I've been looking at the Naka option to be done at teh same time as a remap and Alive intercooler when the warranty is up.
The question is RAI or snorkel..... Fitting it is to get intake air flow improvement and I like the visuals of the entry point through the top of the wing. Keith |

Forget about getting an airflow improvement with any RAI or snorkel, not even with the so called RAM air effect of a Safari snorkel. See below threads. http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic49178.html?highlight=ram+air http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39156....strictions The best bets for keeping a approx status quo airflow with a snorkel seem Naka and Entreq snorkels plus new wider under hood airflow ducts. To me it looks like installing not a snorkel, but for instance only the Entreq Airflow Kit II which will remove the restrictions of the standard narrow plastic intake pipe will result in a real increased airflow. Not sure if Naka have a similar wider duct which can be installed without their actual snorkel, but if so, it probably would have the same positive effect on airflow. Any snorkels themselves won't help airflow, how could they? Eric You never actually own a Defender. The Nak snorkel is a huge improvement over a standard non-snorkel-fitted Defender, due to the elimination of the constricted OE underwing pipe, and the fact that since it has a good, proper centrifugal prefilter you can optimise the airbox with impunity.
No-one who has driven a vehicle before and after would dispute this. |

Nakatanenga does indeed have an "optimized air flow" kit - for both LHD & RHD vehicles. RHD kit was out of stock for some time - but now back in stock.
@ blackwolf: how often do you need to clean the outside precleaner? Can you see easily when it needs to be cleaned? What sort of stuff do you need to clean out - dust, insects, etc? Thank you very much for your valuable input. I drive dusty environments most of the time and still need to decide whether to purchase or not. |

To create a centrifugal whirlwind requires energy from the airflow. You have to pull air to create the centrifugal effect, not push it. So centrifuge is not going to enhance airflow, rather the opposite. Simple physics. I think it is safe to say that both Naka and Entreq bigger diameter snorkel pipes and bigger unrestricted underhood pipes will outdo the negatives of their centrifugal prefilters. But just adding a wide unrestricted underhood pipe which freely pulls air in from the side vent will give better airflow than adding any snorkel with a centrifugal prefilter. As to a centrifuge taking part of the job away from the actual air filter, well I just have my standard airfilter renewed every year which is about every 5000 km or so. The point I am making - repeatedly, it seems - is that if you take two otherwise identical vehicles, one of which has the ex-factory standard induction system, and the other the Nak snorkel and a modified airbox, there will be a very noticeable difference in performance between the two. The Nak centrifugal prefilter also outperforms in every respect (airflow and filtration) the two rather pathetic centrifugal prefilters in the standard system. I am not saying that fitting a snorkel per se improves performance, to say that would be idiotic. If you really wanted to optimise induction performance you'd throw away the airbox and all the standard pipework and have a tuned trumpet sticking up through a hole in the bonnet. |

Maybe you want to give that last solution a try. As far as I'm concerned I'm not going to fiddle with adapting the standard air filter box, but I think the Entreq Airflow Kit II in addition to the already installed Entreq intercooler and stainless pipes is going to have just the optimisation effect I'm after. I love the looks of the Entreq snorkel and I'm sure it's performance is also as good as it gets, but I'm afraid the cyclone filter does not work well with how I clean my truck. Not really, because I am already happy with the way my Defender performs. I like that fact that it runs smoother and cooler than before and is much more free revving. I like the improvement in fuel consumption. I like the fact that the induction system is sealed to a height that means I will drown before the vehicle, and I like being able to empty an eggcupful of crud out of the prefilter every 6 months or so, knowing that it hasn't stuck to the expensive filter element. Above all, I just love the "big engine" growl from the air intake when I accelerate, especially with the window open, although I concede this does tend to negate and consumption improvements. I also like the look, though accept that this is a metter of personal taste. |

Do you have to remove the aerial on RHD Defenders? 1951 80" S1 2.0 1995 110 300TDI 1995 90 300TDI |

No, the aerial clears the pipework.
