We had a library in Norwich which burnt out 25 years ago or so. There was an uproar then how such a building wasn't fitted with sprinklers. Again, the idea of the sprinklers operating by accident, and the damage this would result in was their reason for not fitting them.
I am in no way a fire expert, but in a residential tower, the fitting of hundreds of metres of steel pipe, sprinkler heads and a substantial pump room to pressurise and supply these units is not an easy fix. Stairwells and lobbies in flats built in the 70's may not have the ceiling height making retrofitting difficult if not near impossible. And then the sprinkler heads are vulnerable to accidental damage and vandalism. Now what we need to ask is why these tower blocks from the 60's and 70's are being renovated? Bit by bit we were demolishing these flats until about 15 years ago, the idea of renovation came along. Everyone knew they were cheaply built and in general, they were not universally liked by the Tenants due to poor heating, mould, damp etc.etc.etc. A 20 odd storey building designed with only one staircase is unfortunately always going to be recipe for a disaster. No matter what is done to tart the building up, this will always be its achilles heal. |

Rashers I remember a few of these been pulled down close to where I live and that was going back to the very early 90s, we used to live in a place called the garths. These were pulled down by the mid 90s due to the cost and safety, all replaced with houses. Even the mason net like gaffs were all flatten by the year 2000.
Local mps are a waste of time, all they are interested in is keeping their seats and talking , ours let a 100 year old private school close last year, she said I am doing everything in my power to help, they heard all from her. councils again just like to cut back and knock down listed buildings, I have seen two houses get knocked down, and about 6 small houses built on the grounds, with in weeks. I wouldn't like to see the cut backs made on those. The uk really needs a major clear out of government and massive fresh start. The country really doesn't have a back bone anymore. I do hate to think what it will be like when I hit 70, I am 31 now, I know its a different world now from 10 years ago. We are being led by what I like to call 'professional amateurs'.
Degree in hand, they are fast tracked to management level in various 'professions' and have permeated throughout. No real experience in the field and always covered in teflon when the s**t starts flying. |

With respect, France doesn't look a lot better from the position of an outsider. Neither does America, China, Russia, Germany, Holland and pretty much any other country you can name. From terrorism to immigration and poverty to the rise of strong right-wing or socialist agendas, few countries are able to hold their head up high and claim to have a completely happy populous. The biggest issue is that bad news sells and people love to read it. Are there issues, yes, but social media and 24-hours news compound it, magnify the situation. Wailing celebrities, cashing in on grief to boost their profile and virtue signalling on the news and social media doesn't help - it simply makes the young and impressionable even more uncertain and scared of what the future holds. Perhaps my profession and adacdemic background means I always read between the lines and never take the news at face value but I always ask myself, what is the agenda and what is the bias of this story. It usually doesn't take a lot to figure out what the true motivation is. proloForêt, the sad fact is I know at least six families who regularity holiday in France who now consider it a no-go-zone due to the terrorist attacks in your country - that is down to the way the media portray your country to us, not the reality. For my part, I'll be there in October, and in a major city, and have no more concerns than I would going to London, Washington, Berlin or Amsterdam. The UK is fine. The media are latching on to stories that fit nicely against the backdrop of the election. A lot of people around the world are disillusioned with their leaders and there is no magic bullet. Good solid leadership, for an extended period of time, would be a good start but that is only one element. Anyway, it is too hot for all this serious chit chat, especially when all I really wanted to say was don't believe all you read because if you did, we'd all be living in bunkers and scared of every noise. Best cure is to get out and drive, meet some strangers and rapidly realise that people, on the main, are decent and just want to live their life, without hassle, just like you. |

I think you understand that I compare France to UK. It is not the correct understanding from you. I speak only of UK in this moment because like you are writing in acceptance, there is lot of doing bad news at this time. A country with 2 from 3 elections "hung" and terror on each side, immigrants burning alive like no value, extreme right and left, brexit, scotland, dup etc etc all does not give impression of "we are more united than divided" like all the British celebirity keep to say on television. For France...well this is a long and difficult story true but the time of looking at the UK with envy because we see stability and polititness is now much more difficult even if desirable. This is sad situation and I am hope to you that usual good stable news from UK starts to return soon with good music, theatre, art, sports and a new defender. This would be more acceptable news! |

Diane Abbott has the same effect on me. Patronising, condescending and petulant are the nicest words I'll say about her. I really could'nt care less about her being black and corpulent with a face that looks like the south end of a north bound wildebeest, it's just her attitude that grates. She must have some revealling photo's of Corbyn to have been made Shadow Home Secretary, although the thought of a photo of those two playing "hide the sausage" is enough to turn the stomach. |
