Funnily enough the other day on the radio (Jeremy vine), he was talking to a woman who used to live in a similar kind of block up in 'Brum, which was being "renovated".

The builders were planning to install a sprinkler system into each and every apartment, until the residents protested as they didn't want the "hassle" and upheaval of having the work done.

This stupid woman was even saying "just imagine if one of the sprinklers leaked and soaked our flat"

Well, I'd rather that than the fire.

With respect, France doesn't look a lot better from the position of an outsider. Neither does America, China, Russia, Germany, Holland and pretty much any other country you can name. From terrorism to immigration and poverty to the rise of strong right-wing or socialist agendas, few countries are able to hold their head up high and claim to have a completely happy populous.

The biggest issue is that bad news sells and people love to read it. Are there issues, yes, but social media and 24-hours news compound it, magnify the situation. Wailing celebrities, cashing in on grief to boost their profile and virtue signalling on the news and social media doesn't help - it simply makes the young and impressionable even more uncertain and scared of what the future holds.

Perhaps my profession and adacdemic background means I always read between the lines and never take the news at face value but I always ask myself, what is the agenda and what is the bias of this story. It usually doesn't take a lot to figure out what the true motivation is.

proloForêt, the sad fact is I know at least six families who regularity holiday in France who now consider it a no-go-zone due to the terrorist attacks in your country - that is down to the way the media portray your country to us, not the reality. For my part, I'll be there in October, and in a major city, and have no more concerns than I would going to London, Washington, Berlin or Amsterdam.

The UK is fine. The media are latching on to stories that fit nicely against the backdrop of the election. A lot of people around the world are disillusioned with their leaders and there is no magic bullet. Good solid leadership, for an extended period of time, would be a good start but that is only one element. Anyway, it is too hot for all this serious chit chat, especially when all I really wanted to say was don't believe all you read because if you did, we'd all be living in bunkers and scared of every noise.

Best cure is to get out and drive, meet some strangers and rapidly realise that people, on the main, are decent and just want to live their life, without hassle, just like you.
