How is it that in todays technological age that a newly refurbished building is not fitted with sprinklers?
Watching the TV this morning the scenes were more reminiscent of Bangladesh or India than London. What are we doing or not doing being more the case in point. I can only imagine what those poor people are going through having lost everything and in some cases even their lives. So Sad

Its because this country is hell bent on doing everything on the cheap and "making do and mending"
Why rip down a 1970's eye sore and replace it with a modern building fit for the 21st century when you can just refurbish and fudge the old one so it looks better, but will still be the same 1970s death trap. IF this dread fire is the case of 'natural' causes then I'm amazed at how quickly the fire has spread. Have residents been storing combustible materials in stairwells / landings? Something to my mind doesn't stack up for this to be nothing more than unfortunate events. whatever it's a terrible thing and I can't begin to imagine what would be going through the minds of those involved - emergency services included. |

Latest I heard was it was a faulty fridge or tumble dryer catching fire.

I cannot imagine what it must be like to be trapped on the top floor in a blazing inferno with young children.
The whole event is so sad. Yet again our brave responders have to be congratulated, as firemen rushed into the smoke filled tower to save people risking their own life, and this government does not think they are worth a pay rise…Shocking! My thoughts are also with all those affected and the families of the deceased. I can't start to imagine what the survivors must be going through.
Quite rounded news coverage on Radio 4's The World at One. Too early to speculate, and eyewitnesses can be notoriously poor at being accurate at what happened, but it would seem that the fire spread unusually quickly to engulf most of the tower. |

There are claims that the new external cladding burnt, spreading the fire quickly. This sort of visual improvement has been used on a lot of 1970s buildings. I'd be worried if I lived in one.

as I'm sure many of you will be aware escape stairs common areas (corridors) etc in these types of building should generally be free of combustible materials, together with what I would imagine to be numerous fire barriers each of 1 hour fire rating.
This together with a fire alarm that doesn't appear to have been working to me all sounds very wrong. granted there has been mention that the fire alarm was designed not to evacuate the whole building in one go but as soon as smoke / fire got close to any area of the building the area should have had sounders going to instigate an evacuation. on top of that I'd be very surprised if the fire alarm didn't automatically ring through to the fire service / monitoring station and would have expected them to be on site long before the first fire barrier could have been overcome? All very sad especially when you hear about babies being thrown out of 10th storey windows. I'll still be very interested in knowing how this all came about? |

Very sad for all those involved.
With modern Building regs which would apply to a major refurbishment, its difficult to see how it went up so quick! Staggering and very scary. I shall be testing our fire alarms tonight!! Like everyone else here my heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones and those affected by the tragedy.
Once again we see the courage of our emergency services in action and I wish I could say thank you to them. Children were sleeping in a place they thought they were safe and parents died trying to save them. Shocking and overwhelmingly sad |

yeah true, something bad like this has to happen for tight arses to listen, the thing that bites the worst, is that the people who cut the costs and didn't listen to people who said its a death trap. They wont get punished at all hardly, but the poor people in that thing have paid the price. My thoughts go out to all involved an utter nightmare
High rise buildings should never burn like that the video's overnight madfe it look like a horror movie. Something was seriously wrong, or a lot of minor things were wrong that contributed to that nightmare The things we have to do for fire stopping in flats should not have allowed that to spread until everyone was out, in most fires you ever see in tower block, one are two flats are wrecked but the fire stopping does its job This is just a nightmare senario of advice to stay in your flat in the event of a fire coupled with a moving fire again my heart goes out to all involved, including our emergencey services  2020 P300 HSE |
