Oil leak , but where??
Hello all,

I have a tdci defender 90 and it has quite a big oil leak and the engine oil needs topping up pretty regularly,
Here are some pictures which may or may not help, but could anyone see where the problem is and how to fix it

It's to clean to see where the oil comes from. Clean it well and then do this:

Let it dry and then you will easily spot where it leaks. Whistle

In other words, it's difficult te see from this pictures where it leaks. As it might leak higher up. Roel

It doesn't look like the vac pump to me, it seems to be coming from the front of the engine around where the head and block join and then getting blown back by the fan. The vac pump itself is clean, and all the oily gunk is around the fuel pump which is further inboard.

I would, as suggested above, give the area a good wipe over and see where it first reapperas. It is incredibly difficult to identify the source of leaks from photos alone.

perhaps you have accidently set the chassis lubrication mode to ON; I believe land rover installed it on the later models to aid in longevity as the Defender left production. Problem is its a constant loss system and requires topping up very frequently; and the OFF button not easy to locate.

Apologies... I have no idea, but if you degrease and clean the whole area, and do a short run, you should see the damp patch occur near to the culprit. If its a massive leak, don't go to far as you'll be back to where you started with oil everywhere.

I was kind of serious. I always find it very difficult to find a small leak when everything is clean and shiny. But when it is covered in a small layer off dust and dirt you easily spot the dark spot. Roel

Hi Arron, I have got exactly the same problem, I am in the process of cleaning down, then try to see where the leak is coming from, the vacuum pump is dry and clean, same as yours. its not easy, the amount of oil everywhere you would think we could spot it easily when clean, I haven't found the cause yet tho. I will pop around to yours and see if we can come up with something. ATB Nick.

Hello nick
My oil leak is now sorted out🖒
It was a hose in the engine bay that had split ages ago and it looked like it was still leaking cus it was all over the chassis but i took it in to the garage and there was no leak...
Best bet is to take it into stratstone to get them to check it for free like they did to mine
Or take it to colwells garage in hempsted Thumbs Up
Cant help any more sorry
