Am I being paranoid about excessive milage ?
Folks..... toying with the idea of buying a small runaround to take some of the milage pressure of the 110.

I do around 13k a year just on the daily commute alone and want to keep her indefinately, so for some reason, I seem to feel I shouldn't be putting excessive miles on her..... She's 6 years old and only 38k on the clock. (Got her at 35k)

Have done the sums and putting the purchase price of cheapy box to one side there is only a modest annual finanacial benefit. Equally, she's perfectly comfortable and great fun on my daily drive so this is really driven by a bee in my bonnet about not racking up excessive miles on the pride and joy.

Am I just being a big girl ?

SWMBO has a Disco3 but won't drive the 110 (long story) so can't currently split up the commute across both motors.

(I think I know the answer already, it's just good to hear from the Def2 therapy panel) Bow down Bow down Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

If you like her, keep it and enjoy. It is one of the latest "reliable" Defenders. Puma 110" SW

Cheers, MK - there's not question about me keeping her.... It's just whether I get a small run-around to take on some of the boring milage Smile Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

Simple answer - yes Rolling with laughter

I had exactly the same dilemma a number of years ago when I owned a 911.
Purchased a small car to keep the miles down etc etc.

Didn't work for me , I got fed up with the tin box and went back to the 911, lost money on selling the tin box and in fact, financially I would have been better off just driving the 911 and taking the slight hit when I sold it because it had above average mileage !

As you plan to keep the defender mileage as far as selling is not an issue. I think you would be better off driving it and the money you have saved from not buying another car can be spent on repairs etc.

I have a car to save putting miles (and fuel) in the 109"...it bores me to tears though. Nothing like setting off on an adventure in the Landrover, big grin on face etc etc. Any Eurobox will just cost you in the long run. I got a new on when the scrappage scheme was in force, now that I want to get shot of its in in neg equity...flipping thing! 2011 110 USW

drive it and enjoy it.

if you do 12,000 miles a year you got 10 years till you catch up with my td5 at present!

the toughest thing is finding the time / spare car to keep on top of the maintenence without spending mega bucks at a dealer or indy.

Enjoy it, you might get run over by a Euro Box tomorrow. The engine is good for 250,000 and then you can have it remanufactered at Turners Engineering Thumbs Up

You could always disconnect the mileometer Whistle Laughing

Humm,

I have 67,000 mi in my MY2007 puma and I do not regret any mile that I do.
Enjoy it.

From the finnacial view to see if works:

You must calculate how much you will loss if you keep the Defender as a conmuting car (low resale price + higher consumption+higher maintenance)
Less the cost of the conmuting car + insurance + taxes+ maintenance, etc.
All that at present value.

Probably, with the mileage that you run per year have a 2nd car will be a bad decision.

Cheers Eduardo

i had a spare car when i bought the Puma, i told myself i was only going to use the Puma at weekends and the odd evening trip. ..............................i realised the other day when i got in the spare car that it had not been used for 2 months and there was some mould growing on one of the seats...... Crying or Very sad

i am now thinking of selling the spare car.

if i were you i'd drive it and enjoy it and, as said before, save your cash for some other use. BM52

I felt/feel the same way. I do roughly 25K-30K miles a year, and use my wife's car for the bulk of it. It is a Mercedes E class - a very comfy car - but it isn't as much fun to drive as the 110. Although it is petrol, the consumption is about the same as the 110 - betweek 25 and 30 mpg.

I have an Aygo i use for a general run around ( runs to the local shop and picking kids up from school etc ) does 65+ mpg. I use the Land Rover for longer trips and camping/fun stuff on the weekends. Works well for me..£20 in the small car gets 3/4 of a tank of fuel and last the whole week. Insurance is £150 road tax £14 for 12 months. 110 HT TD5 - 110 XS SW Puma

I had the same problem since I love my defender and didn't want to put excessive mileage on it so I bought a toyota yaris great car but no fun at all so swapping it for an toyota fj crusier. I use my defender only on the weekends only. Problem here in the middle east the land rover market is huge and they only import the full range except the defender where they only import a few hundred and then stop. When they had the td5 out here in 2000 they only imported and sold 250 cars and when the puma came out they only sold and imported 175 cars. Its actually good cause the value of my defender will remain in tact. '08 LR Defender 110
