Well Guys, Just ordered the 170 BAS Remap online tonight. Thought I'd go the whole hog and get the HiFlow Inter cooler, silicone hoses and the slick shift while I was on a roll. Heading back to the UK in July for a holiday and see the rellies. Killing two birds with one stone by picking the toys up while I'm there. Just hope the missus doesn't spend too much while we're there as I need the extra baggage weight for the important stuff. Fat chance!!! It's the first time I've ever wanted to get home from a holiday Won't find out how the remap goes till middle of August, but will keep you posted.

Had this fitted (less the slickshift) for nearly a year now, like above, you won't be disappointed! James

Are these recaps detectable in anyway? I mean if you total the car, can the insurer forensically examine the ECU to see there's been a remap? Or if you've just bought a second hand defender, and suspect a remap is it easy to tell?

If you leave the tool poking out of the OBD port permanently like I do I figure that'll be a giveaway .

Dobby,
Why would you worry if they are detectable unless your planning on NOT telling your insurance? Cars I have had in the past with remaps the highest increase was £50 on a Mercedes for a Brabus remap. Its not worth the risk not telling? All my mods are listed, Insurance will get out of paying anyway they can, God forbid if your in an accident with someone else and your car is not as described.... your on your own. My advise would be if you remap or mod, tell them. |

Upon declaring the remap my increase in premium was $0.

Over here remaps are not allowed it seems. I'm not clear on I whether its illegal in law or its the insurance companies that wont allow it?. French law is clear as mud and I get a different answer each time I ask about something. However it seems people still do it. I've not had it done but would like to once the warranty has finished but need to see if there are any insurance companies that will allow it. Its not just remaps, they wont accept any modifications at all, unless they are manafacturer upgrades.

My insurance company charged me no additional premium for the remap but said that if I had not informed them my insurance would have been void.
Never hold back any information from your insurers, it will bite you in the bum when you need them most. Swine 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue 1967 Morris Traveller 1966 Morris Convertible 2012 VW T5 Camper Quod Abundat Non Obstat. |

Totally agree with above. Insurance companies will try anything to get out of a claim so don't risk giving them the ammunition of not notifying. My 170AB remap didn't add anything to the premium, just admin charge (£30) for changing policy mid-term. James

I was thinking more from the perspective of a second hand vehicle, rather than not telling your insurance company. I'd agree the risk v's premium increase is not worth it. But, with a second hand vehicle, how could you defend your position of not being aware of the remap if one had in fact been done.
So wondering if the recode is detectable in the ECU and timestamped perhaps? |
