Front hockey stick bush play
Is this too much play in the front hockey stick bushes?

On a quest to remove some vagueness in the steering and some tramline type noise on some roads.
Found these bushes had play and also one of the steering ball joints knocks a bit. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Err.. yes definitely. They're totally and completely shot.

Good news is that bushes are cheap - get some proper genuine ones and if you don't have a press, go to your local garage and ask them to do it. The arms are easy to take off... 3 bolts per arm. Make sure you've got a big socket bar to help crank them off. Do the push in bushes at the axle end at the same time too.

I thought so. Might explain some vagueness.
Might as well do three bushes per arm. And no press in my shed. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Im sure it can be sorted at your friendly local small garage... Will make a world of difference.

If the ball joint ends are a bit worn replace all 3 as well - or pick up something decent like the Terrafirma HD steering arms package as they are super easy to adjust and pretty cheap too. Fully greaseable.

I have all three to replace as well as I found one (the front N/S) was knocking and has some play.
With the new bushes and new ball joints it will feel like a new car! 1999 Defender TD5 110
