I have just changed my radiator due to something hitting it, stone or viscous fan.
 Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I warmed the truck up today and after it got warm I noticed there is some play on the fan. Just a centimetre or so but I don't trust it so I have removed for the moment. Looking at the price it does vary on a replacement unit. Is it worth fitting a 12v fan or spend the money and buy a genuine LR part. I always feel annoyed when they say OEM or Orginal Manufacturer as I am trusting them at their word it is the same factory. https://www.lrdirect.com/PGG500340-Fan-Assy/ |

I am about to remove my viscous and put a 12v one all in with thermostat about £80
Never ever fit anything but genuine with a viscous had a oem(britpart) one fitted and it lasted 2 months and took rad and intercooler out when it disintegrated!!! 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid) 2002 90 TD5 Hardtop (Sully) Sold 1998 300TDi D1 (Billy) Sold |

Normal road driving. And the fins just broke off the *^%#part one going through rad and intercooler was actually on my way to Alive for a remap and luckily Gary had a spare rad and intercooler 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid)

My question was directed to JustFX. But for something to go from behind through the rad and intercooler that must have been caught by something. Roel

Click image to enlarge You mean like this? There were some stones about hence why I blamed a stone, but I fear the hard revving to get up hills etc may have made the fan get a little warm. Even after a short drive I was able to get a 1cm move on the fan so I suspect at higher temp/working load I would have a bit more movement. I have removed the old fan for now and will fit a new genuine one tomorrow once it arrives from the stealers (cheapest price). |

Almost certainly the fan blades. Most likely from hitting the water too quickly and the blades getting pulled into the radiator.
I had it happen to mine. The later fans from memory have a slightly different blade shape. I removed my fan and using a dremel reshaped all the blades (slightly larger radius and slightly shortened the blades), then refitted it. Removing the fan isnt really a good long term solution. 2001 90 HT 6.0LS/6spdAuto. 2003 90 td5 soft top. 2014 90 XS SW 2.2. |

I had my temp meter already twice in the right corner. I am sure that will happen more often if I take the fan off. Roel

There are many internet discussions on removing the fan from a TD5. Some say it's fine, towed a caravan across the Simpson Desert in 120deg heat etc, others that the temp gauge won't tell you it's overheating until it is too late and theirs blew its head gasket stuck in traffic taking the kids to school. It's a bit like the two stroke oil in diesel debate, you will never get a definitive answer as there are strong opinions both ways. For example there's the "German car manufacturer" report saying it's a definite yes and the "Fuelexpert" website that says totally don't do it. |

I would keep it fitted and make sure it is tight. That said it rarely gets that hot in the UK...
On my 90 mine did fly off in a similar way a few years ago, wrecked the fan but luckily did not damage the rad at all, I then drove about 280 miles in 30C heat with no issues and that one was quite tuned up as well. I ended up buying a second hand one off ebay, fitted it and it never came off again, even when I wanted it to   |
