Range Rover TDI or V8
Having a debate with a mate of min last night about the merits of a Tdi RR vs a V8 RR. My view was in favour of a V8 as it suits the RR well I feel, smoother, quieter and more refined. My mate didn't quite agree.

We discounted the advantage of the diesels better fuel economy.

So, if you had the same spec / condition / year RRC, one with a Tdi (I'll include the VM also) and one with a V8, which one would you have?

My personal choice would be the TDV8 4.4, reasonable power and relatively good economy. Now gone - 2012 2.2 110 DC XS

A tweaked manual 200 tdi classic is nice (ran one many years ago)
A 300 tdi auto is rubbish, owned a few - never more than a month or so, quicker to walk.
V8s lovely, 3.5/ 3.9/ 4.2 etc etc

I've never owned a VM and only driven a few, not keen I'm afraid

My perfect spec Range Rover - hard dash 93my with EAS in Westminster Grey Vogue SE with a V8 making about 250bhp, Cool

Hello

My dads 'old' one was a TDv8 and he got just 35 mpg regularly, needed nothing but the std servicing and he had it for 5 or 6 years with many many big trips to Europe. Lots of extras and was lovely.

His new one is a TDv6 and its only on around 1000 miles now, but jut on its first Europe trip and dad reports back over 37 mpg Smile

I'm guessing it depends on your millage, as a V8 would probably do between teens and 20 mpg?, fair enough it will sound good and be cheap (ish) as second hand they do seem to drop. Both my dads ones are quite inside? The new one you would not no what your in with the windows shut Smile

either make mine sound like a tractor... Thumbs Up

Ive had both and can say with all honesty that the TDV8 is by far the best engine.
The new engine is 339 BHP

td6 engine is good in the BMW X5 but i didn't like it in the RR
3.6 V8 in the range rover was worlds apart.

Did the OP mean RRC?

If so, I had an Overfinch 5.7 v8... I remember nearly crying one day, when I used £200 fuel!

But, v8 always.

I assumed so as he's looking for tyres on another thread!

Speaking of Overfinches, I've had a couple of 5.0's, nice conversions but one had quick ratio steering - that was really nice to drive "enthusiastically"!!

If you're going to buy a range rover, it might as well be a V8. 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

Yes the discussion was around Range Rover Classics not the later vehicles. So Tdi vs V8.

If that is the case, early model/classic etc, then definitely petrol V8,..unless ya like driving slow, ...very slow,....as has already been mentioned....Current/Later models is of course a whole new ball game, but I think I'd still prefer that screaming 400KW petrol V8!

If fuel economy is not too much of a worry then I would go V8. Silky smooth and plenty of grunt. Just how any range rover should be Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

My Dad had one of the last TDI soft dash RRC and it was just a lovely vehicle, however I can't help feeling cost not considered the V8 would be my choice. Very Happy James
