Thanks Matt. I did look at the brackets for them (which are bloomin' expensive when bought separately) but decided against it for now. If I go down the 'clamp it to the bulkhead' route then I'll likely use a Quickfist, but another idea is to make up a case in something like a Really Useful Box to take the jack, some chocks and a few other odds and sods. It will depend on how big that then needs to be and whether it's easier to store or not. Darren

Spent most of yesterday prepping and painting two wheels. I jacked up one side of my 90 and put it on stands so that I could do one complete side at a time.
I attacked the wheels with a sanding flap disk thing mounted in a drill, to take off the worst of the corrosion and key the remaining paint, both inside and out. I then masked up the tyres and cleaned with panel wipe: Click image to enlarge Next was a couple of coats of etch primer. This is great stuff as it dries so quickly: Click image to enlarge Then, because the etch is grey, followed two coats of white primer, two coats of white Hammerite and a final coat of laquer. The patented Anorak seven coat system Click image to enlarge They're not completely perfect but this is a stop gap measure until I replace them with Wolf wheels. Whilst I had those wheels off, I also installed Glyn Lewis mud shields to protect the rear crossmember and the front outrigger: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge These are great and very easy to fit, apart from getting 25 year old existing screws out beforehand! Looks fantastic, really lifts the appearance.

Ah, if only that were true. The picture is very flattering as it's as rough as a badgers backside in the metal. It'll hopefully get painted soon but I'll be using the roof bars over the next couple of weekends so it'll wait until I can remove them for a bit. Darren

I fitted a set to my 110 last summer and I did have some concerns about mud traps. However this is not so they do a great job in keeping the road dirt off the bulkhead outriggers and on the rear of the 110 it really does a good job of protecting the built in mud traps in front of the rear wheels. I will be adding a set which protect the rear cross member this summer to finish the set. Best upgrade I have made in a while.

What makes you say that? If you go underneath a defender you can see where the mud gets deposited, these are well designed like all of gwyns stuff 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW 1956 Series 1 Hard-top 1958 Series 1 Soft-top |

my main worry kit is stuff getting in behind. Where I live kit, I am close to the sea and things do rot quite quickly

So, most of yesterday was spent prepping and painting the other two wheels. The process was the same as the first two and I ended up with this:

I recently fitted a full head lining but in order to do so I had to remove the LED strip light that I'd fitted not long before as the brackets I'd made weren't compatible. So todays' task was to make some new brackets and refit the light.
The new, slightly more sophisticated brackets were folded up from some 20mm wide ali strip: Click image to enlarge The idea this time is that they will sit behind the 'telephone' panel above the rear door, which will in turn slot in behind the light. A bit of careful measuring had them both in position: Click image to enlarge I also took the opportunity to make a small modification to the light itself so that the cables exited the case from the rear instead of the end: Click image to enlarge And the finished installation: Click image to enlarge The trim panel can now be easily removed without disturbing the light or its' wiring. I also replaced the wiring up to roof level with some thinner stuff, which is less bulky when it comes out from under the trim.
