My wife is asthmatic and it is triggered by certain animals, dogs being one of them. We have a Vizsla and she isn't triggered by the dog at all, even when we visited the breeders house who had 10 dogs in the home (including the pups). They do shed but due to their single coat and short hair they are clean dogs without the doggy smell when they get wet. I think in my wife's case she's triggered by the dust a dog (or any animal) lets off, it seems the Vizsla doesn't do that. So worth considering if you want a dog size dog.
Regarding insurance, I've insured the dog for the first year. This is mainly to cover any genetic problems we may get and accidents the puppy might get herself into. Once that's up we'll cancel the polity but put the £50 into our saving account. £500 a year gets you a reasonably hefty vet treatment, if we can get to two years without incident then I think we'll be quids in. Beware that many insurance policies have you pay an excess and then a percentage of the overall bill. Lastly, I think leaving the dog alone for a small period each day is vital to the well-being of the dog and you. There will come a day when they dog has to be along so you might as well train them for it. Mina is alone for 3-4 hours each morning and she sleeps during that time (I have a security camera pointing at her bed so I can check on her when out). Getting a dog is the best things we've done in a long time, I've lost two stone since getting her and have met so many new people in the neighbourhood. It's all good. Last year our pup had sepsis, caused her leg to swell so much the skin and muscle split so deep the leg bone was visible, 2 weeks in intensive care at a specialist, the bill was over £15. Insurance cap was £4K but without this we would not have been able to afford to save her, pet plan every time for us, as normally larger the breed larger the vet billls, would never go cheaper, just not worth the risk for us. AndyS, mm Vizsla now there's a thought! Where do they figure on DaveW's "being a knob" scale?? I've suggested Greyhound/Whippet to the mrs we'll look into it. I think I'm settled on the insurance side, everyone seems to agree on the first couple of years then save the premiums. Yeah, they're definitely on the scale somewhere. I think it's because they're highly intelligent. EG, Mina know's I won't let her off the lead if she's pulling. The other night while we were walking through the farm she suddenly stopped pulling, came back to me and sat. Blimey, at last the training is working, I thought. As soon as I let her off she ran off, she'd already seen a badger, came back to me to be let off to go off after it. But she also knows to wait for me at junctions in the woods/footpaths and that's what she did. I'm running after her but she waited at each one for me to catch up then went off after the badger again. This went on for about a mile until we got to the badger set. She much more clever than she lets on. I think we'd have a lot more problems with her if I didn't walk her as much but as long as she's getting mental stimulation and outside time she's been really good. |

Just picture you running after this dog that stops at every junction and waits for you to catch up!! Perhaps she thought you were chasing the badger!! Your choice of dog, but definitely insure it. Yes, it might cost a few bob, but look at the expense of specialist treatment.
Our older - now very sadly departed - lab had over £7500 worth of dental treatment. Also he had probably £4000 worth of treatment for a suspect heart problem. Try paying that out of the money you put aside every month when you don't insure. Our younger lab needed an MRI scan - £2000 for that. Our new pup is around £23 / month to insure and as far as I'm concerned it's money well spent. Keeping your dog healthy and fit will do it no harm at all, but it is absolutely no guarantee that you will not be lumped with huge and potentially life limiting (for your animal) bills in the future. Just my take on it, but I wouldn't be without the insurance. |

When I got my first I have this a lot of thought especially as being in a less rural environment. I went the route of not getting insurance for the dogs but do have third party via the Dogs Trust, just in case they run out in front of a car.
I did have some advantage in that we've now had 4 generations of our labs so know them well and there have been almost no issues. I've not had any with my two. Tali has just reached 5 months and today always the first day I didn't come back at lunch to feed them. They're fine on their own the majority of the day, spend most of it either playing or sleeping. In our house my daughter and MrsH would like a dog and so would I but I suffer from asthma which is triggered by cats, dogs and general dust.
I have told them that they can have any dog of their choice as long as it lived in a kennel in the back garden. They have suggested that I live in the garden and that the dog lives in the house so that's it. No dog until I finish my kennel...... Cheers Don. |

I wear the trousers in my house........because my wife tells me I can! Despite my best efforts and yours dear friends cos I read her all your replies, tomorrow (Saturday) we are going to look at a litter of 5 weeks old Cockerpoo puppies
