Hi everyone.
Last week I replaced the pressure regulator on my 90 as it was dripping fuel. I replaced the lot (strainer, O ring, regulator block/pipes with genuine Land Rover parts. No more leaks and everything is fine. The problem I now have (which I think is unrelated) was as I drove home on the motorway this morning I lost power so I rolled onto the hard shoulder. I had the battery and oil light come on but the "engine" light didn't come on during the issue. After about 30seconds of being on the hard shoulder I tried to restart the engine and noticed the fuel pump to be noisy as if was trying to suck fuel but was have a job to do so. I have noticed this in the past when the fuel was low, as it was now although the low fuel light was not on so it wasn't that low. I hit the accelerator peddle 6 times with the ignition on (as to prime the fuel). I did this a couple of times and got the engine running. The motor ran fine and got about another 5miles until the same thing happened. Although it happened another 2 occasions I was able to restart and get to Sainsburys for fuel. The pump seems to have returned to its normal wurring (not sure on the spelling here!) when you switch on the ignition so I'm thing it was a low fuel scenario and my pump is not happy when the fuel is low. I'd done 300miles on the tank which is normal without the low light coming on. The Nancom reports no engine issues other than the normal one I have had all the time. Any thoughts please? Quite possibly the in tank pump bit would be worth checking the fuel filter if it's not been replaced recently 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid)

Thanks for the reply's. I've filled up and driven 100miles with no re-occurrence so it does seem like the pump doesn't like low fuel. I'll have to strip out the tank and take a look. Hopefully its just the filter!

Further to my input above, the pump now seems to be making a "I've got air in the system" noise even when full, just not as bad as when the tanks is getting empty.
The neighbour (Garage owner) says he has fitted a number of pumps for the same issue (Not LR parts) and it turned out to be leaky injector seals not the pump. Oil levels seem OK. Fuel consumption seems normal. How likely is it the seals Guys? Mike Hard Top 90 TD5 2001 Ford 100e 1959 www.youtube.com/mikemakesit |

Id change the seals first as its a damn sight cheaper than a pump so worth trying Ray

Mine exhibited the same symptoms when some of the plastic pipes on the pump had eventually degraded allowing air to pass when not immersed.
Fine above 1/2 a tank, was troublesome to start below half, and the pump got noisier as it got lower. Try the injector seals first as they are a cheap place to start- but i suspect you may have the pump issue that I had. Chris |

Thanks for the replies Guys.
I would rather go down the injector seals route due to cost but could the seals be causing this issue? Air in the fuel lines? If it's possible then a seal change is on the cards. I would just like to understand how the seals could cause this particularly issue. The pump noise gets worse the lower the fuel goes. If the pump was to be changed am I right in saying that's the tank out as there is no access from above like I believe the Discovery has? Here's a good post from pj2106 for replacing the pump from the top if your brave enough to cut the floor.
http://www.defender2.net/forum/post298155.html#298155 I've just had my seals changed (again) as the whirring pump noise had come back and the noise is now gone so they can fix the noise if they are the only problem Ray My build thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic17615.html |

Thanks for the confirmation MK1collector. It looks like the seals route to start with then!
I'm not sure if I want to go down the access hole route if I need to access the pump though. Hopfully I wont have to. Thanks again Guys, I'll report back on how I get on...... Mike Hard Top 90 TD5 2001 Ford 100e 1959 www.youtube.com/mikemakesit |

Injector seals - if they are bad, combustion gasses from engine can pass the into the fuel passage in engine head. Described problem is typical for this, and it is slowly going to be worse. In case, you are going to remove the in tank fuel pump, check, if the surface of pump a "a bit black". This can be carbon from combustion gasses pushed into the fuel a deposited in the tank. All the parts and tools are on the way to me now so I will be able to replace the seals at the weekend. If this fails I guess it's the pump! Mike

Also check if the fuel pressure regulator is leaking. Ray

I've fitted the new injector seals and still get the "angry bees" noise from the pump as the Wife calls it. Not cutting out now but then I'm not letting the fuel get too low. I have a new air bleed valve and a pump that I'm fitting at the week end. I've gone for the VDO type as it seems to be the one to go for.
I'll let you know how it goes....... Mike Hard Top 90 TD5 2001 Ford 100e 1959 www.youtube.com/mikemakesit |

Right, I have now replaced the air bleed valve and fuel filter. The bleed valve on mine was left hand side front of the filter housing. After fitting I purged the system (5-6 Acc pedal pushes with ign on) and it primed very well. Also started on the first turn.
I do have 1/2 a tank of fuel so I need to see how it goes but I definitely think this was an issue, hopfully THE issue! http://www.paddockspares.com/wjn500110-valve-air-bleed.html I'll let you know when its time to re-fuel! Mike Hard Top 90 TD5 2001 Ford 100e 1959 www.youtube.com/mikemakesit |
