George,
I was thinking about going down the Slick Shift route and watched the Youtube fitting videos. Once i'd watched them I thought I would check the bias springs to see if they were set correctly. Needless to say they weren't so 5 minutes later and as if by magic they were. I've stopped thinking about Slick Shift for the time being as the gears are so much easier to find now. George,
Just to point out that the Slickshift makes no difference to the actual selector mechanism itself, it just shortens the throw of the gear lever. So if the mechanism is worn, it will still be worn with the Slickshift fitted (albeit with less movement of the gear lever). Having said that, the Slickshift does make a big difference to general driveability, with much less movement of the lever to select gears, and I rate it as one of the best things I have done to my Td5, but my gearbox was already good with easy gear selection before the Slickshift was fitted. As Phil says, if 3rd and 4th are difficult to find, check your bias springs are set up correctly. These centre the gear lever in the 3rd / 4th gate. When set correctly you should just push the lever straight up for 3rd and straight down for 4th, if you have to move it sideways at all your bias springs need adjusting. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green |
