So having owned a 90 without ARBs for nearly 3 years I have decided that the road manners need to be improved just a little. I am not looking for a fast road car nor am I looking to compromise the off road capabilities - I just need it to not hit the bump stops (resulting in occasional oversteer) on two corners in my daily commute.
I'd appreciate the thoughts of other members on the following:
I see you can buy kits which include all the parts you need but they call-out that if you vehicle has never had bars fitted, there are other parts needed. What are these parts and how complex is the addition of the brackets to enable an ARB to be fitted? Thoughts and experiences much appreciated. Phil |

I did this to my td5 90 2 years ago and it made a huge improvement
I brought a set of take off standard roll bars of ebay I brought new droplinks and mounting brackets Took me about an hour to fit Standard rear and front are enough but make sure you fit both not just rear otherwise can make vehicle unstable in corners Trust me it's not a fun feeling 🙄🙄 Let me know if you need a hand with a link to parts and I'll try and find them for you Hope this helps PJ 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid) 2002 90 TD5 Hardtop (Sully) Sold 1998 300TDi D1 (Billy) Sold |

If you don't have the brackets on your axles you will need to buy them from someone like YRM and weld them on.

I'm not sure how close it compares with the handling being a 110 but i fitted ARBs to my TD5 and it helped the road holding and got rid of a lot of the body roll too. I just got a set of new take offs and all the fixing holes were in place. I've got a bit of extra weight up top from the roll cage which didn't help the body roll beforehand but it certainly sits better on the road now.
When you say its hitting the bump stops, mine thumps a bit with a some steering wheel wobble if I catch a certain pot hole going round a corner on the way home from work but its just the play in the steering box! Another round to it! This is a pic taken last year with them fitted and there was still a surprising amount of articulation. Click image to enlarge 2002 Defender 110 CSW TD5 |

The one corner is tree shrouded, gets silt washed onto it and is negative camber so a pretty nasty combination. I go around it at 25mph but try it at 30 and things begin to twitch in both me and the Rover.... Phil |

"Silt/Negative Camber"?...In a Defender, I'd be careful on that combination, no matter WHAT suspension I had!

The latest...
Bought front and rear take-off ARBs from a 2014 Defender and fitted them on Monday. What a transformation! Thanks for the advice - feels a lot safer on my commute. Phil |
