Does it smell of diesel or is it oil? Can't really tell from the pic but could be the fuel pressure regulator. Had a leak on mine but there was a distinct smell of diesel and the under tray was wet with it too. 2002 Defender 110 CSW TD5

I had presumed it was oil but I will check once I am home at the end of the week and report back.

Yep, that will be the pressure regulator.
Common problem on the TD5, but a straightforward fix. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Seems to be too thick for diesel and no smell.
I'm not sure if this is relevant but when I first start and pull away it seems hesitant for the first minute. Foot flat the revs don't pic up then it lurches into life. |

Click image to enlarge The part highlighted in red is the FPR and is often a common fault for underperforming LR. It keeps the head at a constant pressure, letting excess fuel back to the fuel tank. Diesel doesn't smell like it used to so don't rely on that. When I did mine I took the opportunity to take off the inlet manifold (on a Disco it makes access easier) and give it a damn good clean. Don't buy cheap, go LR and get the gasket. There is also a course filter/strainer in there that is worth cleaning at the time. I did hear tales the FPR can be fixed with cheaper part from a VW. |

There is the chance the rocker cover gasket is leaking out the half moon on the back facing the bulkhead. This tends to run around the head and onto the lifting eye, and drips down onto the gearbox/starter also. You'll probably find the black intake pipe is covered also. Could be a combination of both

I had a leak in that area and it turned out to be the rocker cover gasket leaking from the half moon rubber part.

Ha, I had two leaks - both mentioned above. Half moon on back of rocker cover gasket and the fuel pressure regulator. I bought a kit off eBay to repair the FPR, been fine since and only took half hour ish to carry out. I did it in-between changing oils in the diffs etc..

Ha. Even weirder, I just had to replace my MAP. Lack of power, really struggling to get to 30mph. Looked at the other possibilities, split hoses, sticky wastegate, split intercooler. Lots of people said the MAP never fails and just needs a clean.
Mine was dead as a dodo. I have a known working spare I can lend you to see if that solves the problem with the power... With the MAF you can just unplug it and see if you notice a difference TD5 Defender 90 Discovery 3 HSE |
