Well, its safe to say that my speedo is way out! just received a fine for doing 79kph in a 70 zone in Carcassonne.
Someone mentioned a digital speedo that driving instructors use on the passenger side of their dash, do such things exist and are they any good? |

Do you have an iPhone? If so, download the free app: Speed Box
The speedo in my classic is out by about 10%+, so I use the app as a check. The other option is one of these:- http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/s...peedometer I've looked at one of these as the other option - they are battery operated, so no wiring needed. |

Just change the speedo gear in your transfer box, takes around 30 mins at the most and they're not expensive, even for genuine new ones. Remove the speedo cable from the drive, together with the clip and bolt, pull the old drive out, push the new one in and refit the cable.
If it's not been done before it can sometimes be a pain to get the old one out if it's seized in but most of them pop out pretty easily. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

Strange. By law speedos have to be calibrated slightly optimistic. So when it shows 70 kph, you really should be going at approx 68 kph only. Mine is like that.
Maybe you just have been speeding a bit? Or do you have bigger tires on your rims? Eric You never actually own a Defender. My Pioneer head unit has built in SatNav and GPS with visual and audible speed warnings. The woman's voice does sound very scolding though its enough to make me slow down. Its adjustable so you can set it to the speed limit +/- 0% in town and +/- 20% in the countryside etc. Its very useful. It also has speed camera warnings as a paid optional extra but I'm not sure if it works in France because its illegal.

Doesnt mean much to Defenders when the tyres, wheels, gearboxes, tx boxes, diffs are changed so frequently. My 90 was about 15% out, my 110 was under reading by about 5 - 6mph until I fitted much bigger tyres now it is literally bang on. |

Puma ECU has 3 different settings for tyres to adjust the odometer/speedo, 235/85R16, 7.50R16 and 205/80 R16.
If set to the latter, the speedo is approx 10% off, which might explain why you got a fine You should try to connect a Nanocom and make sure the the tyre size is set to 235/85R16. “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique. -- 2009 2.4 Puma Defender 90 SW 1979 Land Rover Series 3 88" |

Still on original steel rims until I decide what to change them to. I will tackle the gear at the weekend because I know that road and I was sitting at 70 on the dial. Mine is only in kms, doesn't show mph at all and comes from Spain as an ex hydro electric works fleet.
Mostly run on dirt tracks so the dust everywhere was biblical! I dont have satnav and use a windows phone so apps are few and far between. I prefer to keep it as clear as possible on the dash except for my new parrot kit. We tend to leave cars open here and both neighbours have td5 90s whose keys have never left the ignition! Our local, and I mean 30kms away, police station is closing because nobody needs them. |

Sounds like your best bet is one of these then:-
You can find them on eBay as well. Or follow O4DN's route and get the ECU reprogrammed. |

Don't they spray paint the cameras over your way? They do here 👍 Within a day of them cleaning it, it's sprayed again.

Oh, no need to get it "reprogrammed", it's merely a setting in the existing ECU, a 5 second job with a Nanocom... Edit: I could check the setting for you if you were to come near Toulouse, but I guess you have other people with a Nanocom willing to help closer to you... “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique. -- 2009 2.4 Puma Defender 90 SW 1979 Land Rover Series 3 88" Last edited by o4dn on 9th May 2017 2:21pm. My Garmin adjusts the speed camera warnings to comply with the law of each country I'm driving in. In Switzerland it will show no warning as illegal, period. No wording at all is acceptable here. Not surprised about that. In Belgium it will clearly say "speed camera warning at xxx distance" as it is legal to do so apparently. In France it will say "zone dangereuse sur xxx mtres". Not mentioning speed camera by name gets you away with the law there apparently. Why am I not surprised? Eric You never actually own a Defender.
