I think there are some regulations which outlawed bench seats around the introduction of the fold out seats. Something about all seats must be forward facing? Not sure if you can legally retrofit bench seats in a newer car. I'm not an expert on U.K. Rules though.

I think justtellme is right, the reason the forward facing seats were fitted was because the law changed The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

Like many things it's illegal but you'll still pass an MOT with them (the seatbelts wont even be tested!) and you're highly unlikely to have any trouble from the Police for it.
Where you might have an issue is with your insurance, you'll have to declare it as a modification. However when it comes to a claim they 'may' refuse to pay out on the basis they were illegal. As far as actually fitting them goes, it's easy. They were hardly complex bits of kit and just bolt to the inside of the tub on top of the car. On a post 2007 car with the stepped wheel arches you may need to make up some little feet for the seats to fill in the step, but a bit of wood would do that. |

At least on my 300Tdi 110 CSW they don't quite just bolt through the floor - there's a large reinforcing bar that provides a fixing for the seat belts. This bolts through the floor to spreader plates underneath but it also bolts through the C pillar as well.
Ironically I've got all the bits if someone's interested as I've just removed them from my 110 and repaired the corrosion holes they caused. Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |
