Evening all
After my remap i find that there is a fade when the brakes get hot. I live on the side of a little mountain and when giving it a bit of beans it's struggling. The expense of new callipers is not something i want to do so i had a search and these have come up. Has anyone else tried them. Without intending any offence to anyone on here:
My opinion/experience: -Never use drilled discs on a road car -Never buy any EBC friction material. Standard calipers in good health with a good quality brake pad will do you well. I assume you already have vented discs? Can recommend Ferodo DS2500 or Mintex 1144 pads if you can get them for your calipets 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

Steve
No offence taken at all. I'm looking for the best option and people with experience of the products that they recommended. Could you please elaborate as i want to get it right first time. You're correct with i have vented discs that have only done 8k. I don't drive like a farmer (no offence intended) so want it to stop properly. Jay |

I saw a Merc SUV today with drilled and grooved discs today which looked like from the factory.
Why do we have issues with them on Defenders? Seems to be the drilled type mostly. Is this due to inherrent heat stress issue? Size of disc or similar? I'm running just standard discs, never seen the need to change really. But yes, standard pads and or discs are pretty much perfect really. I've opted for EBC green and had no issues at all, very good and a long lifespan. Genuine pads are expensive, the OE mix up seems to be hit and miss with some getting brands that are believed to be OE and they aren't and so on. When I need replacement it'll be hard for me to decide between genuine and Greenstuff again. As per most here, I can only speak from my own use and experience. Personal experiences:
EBC greenstuff pads fitted to car on trackday = friction material turned to ash and brakes failed. EBC redstuff pads on my Jaguar currently = no better than the normal Eurocarparts supplied Pagid pads fitted previously and create the most unimaginable amount of brake dust. Even more shocking considering they are sold as a low/no dust formulation. They have lasted about 20k however but have more or less ruined the brembo discs i fitted at the same time. I was do dissapointed in them when i bought them that i contacted EBC to be told some rubbish about needing to also fit their upgraded rear pads to get better braking. Obviously never heard about weight transfer! Ran Ferodo DS2500s on my tuned T5 Volvo for about 20k and they were always superb, never squealed and even when towing my 205 on a big car trailer on steep hills never faded. The car did have some grooved discs fitted (prior to me buying) and i would never fit them again. The added noise from the pads passing over the grooves was very annoying and the grooves were more or less perpetually clogged with brake dust/rust. Drilled discs are fitted to sporty cars from the factory 99% for bling value only (carbon ceramic excluded). If you look at the majority of race cars you will rarely see drilled discs fitted (occasionally grooved as it does help remove glazing from pad surface). I have seen many a set of drilled discs wity fractures between the drillings from fatigue/heat cycles. Personally leave the fancy discs to those who want looks and just buy decent branded discs and a good set of pads. Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

Steve. Ferodo DS2500 pads,....AWESOME. factory fit on some HSV products, had 'em on a GTO we owned with AP 6 spots, a superb pad,...hot or cold....a bit of dust, but better to have pad dust that discs being chewed up. However, not sure they'd be the right pad for a Defender,
Drilled Discs. Well lots of high performance cars do have 'em, but there have been instances where cracks do emanate from the holes,...sometimes, particularly on after market discs.. I'm a great fan of OE, because all the R & D has been done. It's the same in Aussie, many owners of V8 Commodores change pads etc, with varying, or worse performance than standard, & invariably with greater disc wear. So for me, unless I had a Defender with substantially more power than standard, I reckon a properly serviced & adjusted set of standard brakes & pads should do the job. Pickles. |

+1 Though dont agree with Mintex, while the pads are great they squeal like mad! Ive been using Ferrodo and Blueprint since, no squeal good braking. Grooved/slotted discs would be the only thing id fit as the slots can help sling muck etc.. off the discs and keep the pads clean/remove glaze as you said! |

Ebc seem to be a very much love/hate thing, it's an argument I've seen a couple of times on almost all the car forums I've used!!

The problem with EBC is their quality control is so hit and miss. I read the little leaflet they include with the pads once. Even that makes vague statements like "these may or may not reduce brake dust". Ive got green stuff in my Mini at the moment and they're good, but in the past i've had other sets of Greenstuff that were terrible, some loads of brake dust others little dust but poor brakes and some loads of dust and no better than standard pads!
Pagid from Eurocarparts are OE spec pads, they're not racing pads or anything fancy like that they're just premium quality pads. I used them in my old L322 and my Mum's Citroen C3 and they are superb. Mintex are made by the same company as Pagid (TMD Friction), but Mintex are now TMD's budget range, Hence it's £15 for Mintex pads but £40 for Pagid. Try not to get too hung up on the Brands, it's all marketing, and the manufacturers know people will buy cheap Mintex pads on the basis of the name thinking they're high performance pads as used in motorsport.... Bear in mind that the same manufacturer may have several different compounds in their range, for example Mintex still do some specialist compounds like the M1144, which they sell as premium pads (for minis for example) as they know people still buy them, but the bulk of their range of pads are budget ones. I've got mintex in my Defender at the moment, they work 'ok' but they're noisy. The pagids i've used in the other cars have been silent with a fast bed in time. Drilled discs have a bad reputation, as drilling holes in the discs weakens them, people bought cheap discs and found they failed which then gives drilled discs a bad reputation. If they're good quality, the holes won't make any real difference as they'll have been properly engineered, like the factory fit ones on some cars. I mean most motorbikes have drilled discs. Whether you actually need them on a car is another question, i found on my mini the holes just used to clog up with muck anyway, the grooves seemed to work well although you did get a little more brake noise under hard braking. |

Pagid in the UK is just a licensed name applied to Eurocarparts' own braking kit.
It's not the same as European OEM Pagid, sadly 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Nothing wrong with original discs or pads. Its a Defender not an AMG Merc.
My pads are still the originals from new, 97k miles later. If you're using the middle pedal that much your wasting fuel or driving like a prat. Engine braking stops you down most slopes and a quick stop from 50mph doesn't really heat things up that much. As someone else said, grooves and holes are very much OTT. Race cars are flat on the throttle and hard on the brakes constantly hence carbon ceramic brakes. On a defender you shouldn't get them hot. 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon. |

ECP are the exclusive UK distributor of Pagid, but they're not really a licenced name. Which would suggest ECP were having stuff made by someone and having the Pagid name stuck on the box. It's not really like Supermarkets sticking once well respected electronics brands on cheap chinese made TV's. It just means ECP can charge what they like for Pagid stuff in the UK and TMD don't have to bother with their own marketing and distribution network. Quite an informative post from ECP on a Mercedes forum, of course you have to allow for a bit of bias, but it's pretty fair really. http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/index.ph...er.120748/ |

Thanks for your input but i didn't ask for your opinion on how to drive my defender. I want the best performing disks and pads for a fast Defender. Thanks but if you can't be constructive don't answer the post. |
