Refurb xs side steps
Looking at refurbish my xs side steps due to rust ,to do it properly I need to take off the chequer plate tread steps ,but these are secured by very large rivets.

My questions are if I drill these out

Does anybody know where I can get replacements
Can they be fitted at home, they look a bit big for a pop rivet gun

Did think about riv nuts but the tube underneath is round so don't think that would work
Steps look like the below picture

Any help appreciated

Are they large diameter rivets or just large headed?

As an alternative, are there any drainage holes in the lower edge of the tube?

If not you could drill a few underneath where the rivets and replace with button head bolts. Use the holes underneath to feed in the nut & if you want fit blanking plugs afterwards.

I think these are large diameter rivets, what you need for these is a lazy tongs rivet tool.

When you refurb you steps be sure to inject some cavity wax or they may end up like mine did.

I think mine were long 3/16 rivets so can easily be done with a rivit gun and any local bolt suppliers or even b and q should be able to supply rivets.

How convenient - I just took mine off to sort out the start of some rust, but was wondering how to fit the chequer plate back on...

One additional question - are these things r/l handed? I forgot to mark which step came off which side! Embarassed

Evening Eutek,

110 ones looking at the photos on page 2 of the link I posted above appear to fit either way round as the brackets seem to be a mirror image at each end. Offer them up and see how they fair where they attach. 90 ones are different and only go one way as the brackets at each end are different.

Super - thanks, was looking at them and they appeared to be the same on both ends, will try later after I strip them down and re-paint.

Hi - do you have a link for the type of rivets you used?

I drilled the ones in the side steps out today and they're rather big, doubt my mr. happy shopper manual rivet tool would be up to the task, will most likely need to get a bigger one.

Hi all,

just stripped my side steps off my truck to clean up.

bolts are all pretty sh*gged (rusted / rounded etc).

They seem to be unusual in that they are M8, but have a metric 10mm hex head.

I would normally say, sod it and ram in some std M8's, but the locations for some of the bolts are close to obstructions (supports into the chassis for example).

Any feedback on this?

I'm tempted to use stainless cap head screws with washers.......

Cheers
Andy

Does anyone know if the rubber surround is available? Mine has come away from the tread.

Thanks all

Ok, so I have stripped back and cleaned off the old paint and rust debris with my new grinder and wire brush attachment.

I sprayed with some farten to kill any rust particles, now its drying.

I am planning on using the halyards truck bed liner as the paint.

But the alloy tread plate and the rubber plinth has had better days. Any ideas for options on cleaning thing up?
