Have you considered the Safety Devices 6 point internal cage that the soft top hood can sit on?
Just did mine. Write up to follow soon. Click image to enlarge H[/img] |

Really? The roof caving in would be the least of your worries. Your more likely to break your neck on all that metalwork

Ok, I see your point regarding the overhead and forehead bashers being much closer to the driver than the standard headlining, and I must admit I don't have much of a clue regarding the common specification/regulations and wisdom behind where or where not to place such parts (aside from reading the NZ road standards re. cages, which according to the SD engineers are very restrictive).
But in the absence of that I would have hope that anyone putting in the time, $$ and effort to build a cage would have thought the dang thing through to that level, like "in the event that the bad thing happens, then so and so factor will restrict further bad things, and then accordingly I can place element in question here". BUT, yes, it takes all kinds of idiot to make the world go round and I'm reminded of the Dunning-Kruger effect: "a cognitive bias in which low-ability individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly assessing their ability as much higher than it really is" Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

I guess it's lucky everyone has different requirements... otherwise there could be a shortage of awful fake Recaros. For road use I would want the front hoop to be external along with the side / roof bars. The main hoop inside is fine when padded. It looks very much like that image showing the full internal cage is in a competition car where harnesses and helmets would be used 2001 90 HT 6.0LS/6spdAuto. 2003 90 td5 soft top. 2014 90 XS SW 2.2. |

I think theatre's internal set up looks like a very tidy internal roll cage, nicely made.
Having made a cage myself once, it is a God awfully difficult job to get right. I'd go along with the comment that the front part should be external as the defender does not lend itself to a nice straight route to the chassis outrigger on the inside and of course does leave the noggin somewhat vulnerable if not wearing a helmet. Its built to do a job, not look pretty and shiny and as such I'm sure it will excel. Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |

Unless used with multi point harness and possibly helmets I'm not sure a full internal cage really helps. You might avoid a roof collapse then still get a skull fracture from those internal tubes. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

Why internal? Its not a drift car and you'll loose space in an already spatially limited vehicle. Defenders actually look good with external cages so...
