Last month I bought a 90 , for a rebuild,.....
Click image to enlarge unfortunately after stripping it down, I found the chassis to be too far gone ! Click image to enlarge However.... I had bought a V8 Disco for the engine..... Hmmmm... the Disco has got a very good chassis.... Click image to enlarge So I just cut the back off... for a defender rear crossmemeber Click image to enlarge But that still left it 7 inches too long in the wheelbase , soooo... Click image to enlarge I cut it in half , removed a few unneeded body mounts Click image to enlarge Then .... threw away the 7 inches I didnt need Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge And reassembled somewhat shorter... not sure if the masking tape is going to be strong enough though Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge 1984 300TDi hardtop Stornoway Grey 1984 200TDi hardtop..... soon to be a V8 .. but which V8 ? 1974 DAF T244 4x4 wagon converted to a motorhome 1976 Jaguar XJC with supercharged engine |

Blimey, I wish I had your skill...
But... what reg number are you using for the 'new' vehicle? Discovery or Defender? Surely you'll need an IVA to comply... Last edited by LiftedDisco on 16th Apr 2017 7:37am. Edited 1 time in total |

Whilst I admire your technical skills in chopping the chassis, a 100 inch Defender would be (would have been) sooo much cooler. Darren

100" Defender is my aim - I'm currently building a Tornado based on RRC running gear...
Long term project - timescales are partly down to my time, the learning curve in building such a thing and budget! |

Thanks for the comments guys,
Greeni, yes I agree, must have it stronger than the original, going to plate inside with some 12mm holes plug welded after. Land rover Anorak, Yes I agree, but I built a 100 inch V8 defender before ( a log time ago) and also, as is the way of things, this started out as a smaller project than it is now ( due to rust ) and I want to keep it as simple as possible , to get it finished this summer as I am doing the bigger jobs outside ! and buying then shortening a 110 back body is a big job ! also I have a chequerplate rear lining for a 90 . Photo from the 100 inch back body build ( 1993).... god I feel old ! Click image to enlarge Turned out OK though Click image to enlarge Lifted Disco, Yes I agree regarding the reg, I will just tell the DVLA what I have done , then depending on what way the wind is blowing on the day, do as they say, an IVA isnt that bad, and I dont care if its B reg defender, P reg Discovery or Q reg hybrid, its a keeper ! I like your Tornado idea ! My plan is to eventually change the Rover V8 for a Jag V8 , already looking for a donor ! 1984 300TDi hardtop Stornoway Grey 1984 200TDi hardtop..... soon to be a V8 .. but which V8 ? 1974 DAF T244 4x4 wagon converted to a motorhome 1976 Jaguar XJC with supercharged engine |

Heh, heh, fair enough. 'Already done it' is the best excuse to do something different. Darren

Why bother contacting the DVLA/VOSA?
You've pretty much built a like for like 90 chassis. Nothing else has changed on it (as in, become a 100"), I'd cut the old VIN number out of the 90 chassis (or the whole side of the front dumb iron) and weld it onto the "new" chassis. All you're doing by contacting them is opening up a huge can of worms and paperwork and trips to the inspection office and having a bloke come around your house, drink tea, "inspect" your chassis and tick some boxes. I had this when I built a 90 some years back. the DVLA inspector said to me "next time you won't bother contacting us.... will you" followed by a wink.... "just get on with it" |

Very good point, I suppose its just a 'very' much repaired chassis ....
Lets see how it goes, if it ever stops raining I will get on with it ... but welding in the rain doesn't seem like a good idea ! 1984 300TDi hardtop Stornoway Grey 1984 200TDi hardtop..... soon to be a V8 .. but which V8 ? 1974 DAF T244 4x4 wagon converted to a motorhome 1976 Jaguar XJC with supercharged engine |

Hate to say it but..... This is definitely Q plate territory.
Second hand chassis under the defender 'might' get to keep the chassis donor i.d (V8 discovery) if you can jump though enough hoops and tick enough boxes, but highly unlikely. Want to keep the 90 i.d then either repair the existing chassis or buy a brand new like for like replacement from one of the various commercial suppliers and do a straight swap. There's far too much dodgy, funny metal out there already without adding to the pile!
Why inform/tell the DVLA at all? Can't really believe I am hearing that on a forum like this, but it being the law is a good reason, but if you are happy for illegal ringers to be on the road then I suppose that makes it ok? |

The laws are there to stop fraudulent activities and unsafe practices of cut and shuts that led to dangerous vehicles being sold on to unsuspecting buyers.
The OP has replaced the chassis with a like for like replacement that is in no way inferior from a safety point of view. It doesn’t fit with the exact wording of the law, but equally it’s not been done to try and defraud or has resulted in an unsafe vehicle. He’s also stated he’s happy to do whatever with DVLA to make it compliant. So, it’s not worth ruining this thread with arguments over what’s legal or not. We can leave it up to the OP to sort that out, and can we get back to talking about the rebuild please 👍 |
