blower / a/c conundrum
can anyone give me some advise / pointers on this please.

1st - speed 1 on the blower packed up,
2nd - speed 2 on the blower packed up,
3rd - I've noticed the a/c doesn't work (cool the air) but the button does light up,
4th - I've noticed speed 2 on the blower works when a/c button is depressed?

any pointers gratefully received.

Thumbs Up

You mean with a/c off only speed 3 works?
And with a/c on speed 2 works but not 1?

The blower switch works like this:
- speed 1 connects 2 resistors to the blower motor
- speed 2 connects 1 of those resistors
- speed 3 goes directly to the blower motor
- if a/c is on, the 2 resistors are connected, so the blower runs on speed 1 even if the blower switch is at 0

thank you.

speed 1 doesn't appear to work at all.

and no cooling appears to be present at all.

speed 2 only works when ac is on (even though there is no cooling) ?

The business with the resistors made sense - ie I thought the two resistors but have blown but then I realised speed 2 works when the ac button is switched on?

it makes no sense to me?

why there is no cooling I don't know
maybe that problem is separate from the blower problem

strange indeed... I'd check the wiring harness, beginning with the switch

can you tell if the blower speed (2 with a/c on) is the low, middle or high speed (i.e. are there 2, 1 or 0 resistors involved)?

Agghh.

Speed hasn't worked for a few months now and yet just this morning it's working?
I'm thinking switch as you needs checking first but suspect one of the resistors is blown as still no speed 1.

And a/c is probably a different issue ie no gas?

Take it to Kwikfit for a regas - if the AC doesn't work they don't charge you. Wink

your'e welcome. I'll charge my usual hourly rate Laughing

if the first R was broken, you wouldn't have speed 1, either with or without ac switched on, as the ac connects to the same wire as switch position 1 (to engage speed 1 even if the switch is on 0).

ok, but that doesn't account for the blower working on 2 with ac on (only!).
ac connects to speed 1 not 2. So there must be a short between 1 and 2 to connect ac to speed 2. AND there must be a disconnection between switch position 2 and resistor 2 (located before the short) in order to ONLY work with ac on and not without.

so, two disconnections and one short at the same time?
if that's true, it's probably in ONE location. maybe something's fried inside the resistor box or its plugs.

The Puma heater switch/control is prone to burning out, I think due to excess heat at the rear. Mine was replaced under warranty.
Don't know where the resistor packs are situated, but mine failed to operate fans at all except when aircon was switched on.

I think it's dash out to have a look at the switch.

speed 2 working ok at the moment without a/c on.
if the speed switch is prone to failing due to heat I suspect this is more likely the problem as if speed 2 had failed due to resistors blowing I doubt they will ever work again.

Perhaps resistors for speed 1 is failed and there's a switch issue due to speed working again. thanks guys.

Might get a chance to have a look tomoz. will keep you posted and Happy Easter to you all. Thumbs Up

Just the centre switch panel, pop the radio out, undo the two torx screws and pull the centre bit out (unplug all the switches, they're all keyed so you can't plug the wrong ones back in)

Heater controls can then be removed to look at the switch, it's about 10 min work.

Yes, centre panel only. Took the dealers 1/2 hour and did it while I waited. Make certain you have the radio code if needed.
When I rang the dealers with the symptoms they gave the usual, yes many of them do that! Didn't need to inspect it, just booked it in for a new unit. Quite expensive to replace I believe, so hope you can repair.

Hmm must have forgotten to update this.

blower fixed but still no a/c.

fan issue was down to something having burnt out on the resistor pack......

fan fixed but still no a/c. no life at all in terms of a/c except for the little on the switch does illuminate - any ideas guys. I'm off to Spain in a few weeks and I'll really like to have it sorted by then. Thumbs Up

It could be the gas could have leaked out, the compressor clutch could have failed, the compressor could have failed internally, the pressure switch could have failed...... There's really no way of knowing without any diagnostics being done on the AC system.

You need to check all the fuses, and check the wiring under the bonnet for damage if thats all good then you need to take it to Kwikfit and have them regas it - if the AC doesn't work after they've regassed it they wont charge you for regassing it.

The resistor packs get hot in normal use, it's how the slow the motor down, they just give up and burn out, it's not unusual on any car. Some are more prone to it than others, Especially common on Vauxhall Zafiras......... Shocked
