Before anyone says - do a search I have done but I am finding mixed views and responses - hence the post
Looking at getting 285 x 75 x 16 tyres - not sure which ones yet ( either KM2's or SST's ) as some real mixed bag of prices coming through - I was talking to 2 dealers this morning who both said that I'd need to put them on modulars as the 7 x 16 alloys are not strong enough for these . I can see from the posts that many are running 285's and I'd appreciate some feedback / comments from those who are actually running with these - Was also told that I'd need a 2" list to stop the rear tyre catching - especially in off road conditions So Is it legal to fit 285's to boost alloys ? Is there any issues with catching at the rear ? Do you need a lift ? or is it best to stick with say 265's which opens up choices like Mickey T ATZ's or even consider 255x85's As I said above I know there have been other posts regarding choices - but there does not appear to be a clear choice. I would really appreciate feedback from those using these Thanks guys Defender 110 County SW Disco 3 HSE Freelander 2 HSE - SOLD going back to a car www.lothian4x4response.org |

Cheers for the reply - What wheels are you running at 8.5 ? had a quick look at the gallery but can't see from there -
They will be going on a 59' County - not sure if there is any diff in the suspension set up Okay - I hadn't picked up that these did not like lifts - Why ? guess I've more reading to do first- On my TD5 90 I had the 2" lift Terrafirma set up and with 265's they just looked a tad small - Hugh Defender 110 County SW Disco 3 HSE Freelander 2 HSE - SOLD going back to a car www.lothian4x4response.org |

Probably could find a better one than this if needed but it will give you an idea

265s will fit standard 7" rims ok, whilst 285s can be fitted some tyre places won't do it and it is not recommended - I wouldn't risk it in case Dibble got a bit 'jobsworth' and I'm sure the insurance company would use it to try and wriggle out of a claim.
I have 265s on standard TR Boost alloys without a suspension lift on the 90 (HD springs) and they look a lot better than the originals. When I can justify it the Puma will get 265s as well John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |

I am running 285/75x16 KL71s on standard 16"x7" Boost alloys with 30mm spacers and no lift on a Puma 110 DC with no problems whatsoever and no contact during articulation. The only downside is that you have to keep the windows shut on muddy surfaces or the inside of the car gets splattered.

We will not fit a 285 section tyre on a 7J wheel, min 8J required for the 285's, but as JSG says 265 are fine on a 7J.

Now not to pick hairs with the hole 285/265 on 7"/8" wide wheels but I had a quick look on Devon 4x4's website after AndrewS said he was fitting terrafirma alloys with beadlocks wrappped in 305 bfg's.
Now I don't profes to know what's best but if you follow the link they say that 7x16 is good for up to 300mm http://www.devon4x4.com/index.php?page=sho...;Itemid=14 Russell 2011MY 110 XS USW Black |

As an aside - I've ssen a few comments on dealers not carrying out warranty work if larger wheels / tyres have been fitted and it is worth noting that 265 were offered as a dealer option for a while on Defender 90s with the boost wheel. This would lean one to believe they are ok with 265 tyres. John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |

From what Hartwell’s of Northampton told me last week that 265’s would not qualify if warrantee work was required along with my 285. However they are a bunch of crooks anyway so I would not take the slightest bit of notice at all. I have had work done to my 110 at Marshalls under warrantee and they were happy with the 285’s and so I think it is up to who you use.

Can I ask what the benefit of 285 tyres is?

Russ, I wouldn't trust that.... It is the tyre company that lays out the peramaters or their tyres. Also you will find out that some 285s are only 275 wide and others can be upto 305 wide depending on what tollerences they are made to. With Beadlock it makes it a 8" rim which is ok for 305s BFG Recomed a 7.5+ rim width for 285s (hence I went for 16x8 rims)
They give you a little more ground clearence than 235/85s, they don't foul on the arches and they are a damn sight cheaper than 255/85s- I like mine as they take me wherever I want them to go Glyn |

285/75 and 16 inch wheels give you a wheel / tyre combination height of 83.39cm 265/75 and 16 inch wheels give you a wheel / tyre combination height of 80.39cm 235/85 and 16 inch wheels give you a wheel / tyre combination height of 80.59cm So you get 3cm more diff clearance assuming I've done the maths right. BFG AT 235/85 are £126.50 and the same in 285/75 are £142.60 at camskill so assuming for the case of argument that's what you pay, you're paying 80 quid for 3 cm of ground clearance on the tyres alone, plus you need different wheels to the boosts and quite a bit more than 80 quid. I'm all for modifications, but this is one I don't understand. Ok if you're doing challenge events in your purpose built trayback then you might want big simex tyres etc, but for standard defender use ie road, green lanes, beach, quarry etc, I'm not getting this 285 thing Or is it just that they look better? If so then fair enough |

Hmmm... my BFG M/Ts cost me £115 each which means I made a saving of £57.50 on rubber by buying 285s. I think my problem is that I like sticky mud and Where I used to run 235/85 I used to get stuck so upgraded to 265/75 where I only got stuck a couple of times and I have never been stuck with 285/75s... I do rate them VERY highly. I think it was Steve (Discocuzzy) who had 265s on our first meet down Sailsbury and he saw the light by the end of the day and wanted 285s....... and then got 305s, lol.
