Must see places in the UK (England / Wales / Scotland / ...)
Continuing on my other post: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic48788.html
Looks like we'll be doing more of a road trip, with maybe a guided greenlane tour somewhere.

What are the must see places in the UK. Was thinking on for instance the landscape they filmed Skyfall in, but I'm sure there are plenty of other great roads and views and hidden gems out there "outsiders" don't know about.

Depending on this, I probably will be able to create my vacation and select a greenlane tour.

Thx!

For me, it's the West Highlands and the Isle of Mull for stunning scenery.

Green lanes, if you go through Wales try Strata Florida (wear a snorkel), the Wayfarer is a nice drive.

The Peak District has some fantastic scenery and miles of green lanes too.

Also Applecross , over the pass called Bealach na Ba, it is the closest thing to an Alpine road we have. (Highlands).

Elan Valley, close to Rhayader in mid Wales. Lots of great places to walk and drive. Scenery is fantastic, but take your wet weather gear Very Happy

You can even see the dam that was used in the advert when they winched the 90 up it, which Hammond repeated recently.

I'd second Elan Valley - and while you're there, a drive through the Brecon Beacons. There's a Victorian spa town near Rhayader called Llandrindod Wells that for some inexplicable reason I want to live in. Also North Yorkshire Moors are quite dramatic. https://instagram.com/bentheoandrews

For Skyfall locations you want to Glencoe and Glen Etive. The house was a set built on Hankley Common, which is near Elstead in Surrey. Worth a trip for the remains of the copies of sections of the Atlantic wall built there to practice breaching methods during WW II.
Plenty of opportunity for long walks or runs over the common as those of us who have trained there will remember. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

Thx! Will look into all that.

PS I'm not only looking at landscapes to visit. Anything worth visiting will do. Must-see towns, must-see anything really...

North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales National Parks.

If one or the other, go for the North York Moors and drive Rudland Rigg (green lane and awesome views). Also must stop if you like views is the top of Sutton Bank (there is a car park and visitor centre) and the view is the best ! Also nearby is Rievaulx Abbey ruins, Helmsley Castle and you are also only 40 mins from the East Coast - Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay are superb!

From the Yorkshire Coast, if then travelling to Scotland, the Northumberland Coast is spectacular, with awesome quiet, sandy beaches, castles, etc. and Lindisfarne / Farne Islands.

Stonehenge in Wiltshire is a major visitor attraction and you are not far from Salisbury plain for a bit of sensible off roading.

Winchester is the ancient capital of England with a 1000 year old plus cathedral and lots of military museums. Just on the edge of the south downs national park and a copy of King Arthur's Round Table in the great hall.

https://www.beaulieu.co.uk on the edge of the new forest is a good day out and the New Forest itself is accessible for camping by the side of the road. HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response

Having just spent a long weekend there, I'd put Ironbridge in Shropshire on the list. Known as the birthplace of the industrial revolution, the whole area is full of history and some pretty spectacular industrial archaeology.

I second Pam's suggestion about the North York Moors and Northumberland. Holy Island is an amazing place and becomes even more special if you have time to stay whilst it is is cut off from the mainland. But would add York and Durham as great towns to visit for things historical.

One place I am yearning to go is the Callanish Stones, and associated surrounding landscape:

Been to the area before, and loved it, but keen to go back.

Also Knoydart, Rum, Applecross, White sands of Morar, ... basically all the NW500 route PLUS Callanish Wink
