Big Cry Big Cry It doesn't matter how much I do the adjuster up, I've still got 15 degrees of wobble in the box Sad

Surprisingly, although the UJ's and rubber bit look very old, there is no detectable movement in them Shocked

So it's new box time Sad ... has anyone used Steering Specialists Ltd? they sell on fleabay and they are the cheapest by far... they appear to include collection and delivery in that price.. and an 18 month warranty too.... Rolling Eyes is it too good to be true??

And having read horror stories about big presses and gas axes to remove the drop arm, how hard can it be? cos at the moment it's cheaper to buy a new arm, than it is to get a puller to remove the old one... and I don't have access to a hot spanner anymore Evil or Very Mad

I've got a couple of parallel pullers kicking around from changing the diff nose spline on the L322, and while I'd say that they are better than a normal puller, heavy duty isn't a word that I'd use to describe them...... HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RRC 2.4 TD... it's either a stretched 90 or shrunken 110!!

Just in the middle of changing everything over to Stainless Steel Sumo Bars from Gwyn Lewis and came up with the problem of pulling the arm off the steering box. We have a few different spec of Bearing and Pinion Pullers and because of the lack of space I could only get a 15t Shocked hydraulic Puller on it. It still didn't budge and so got a small Grinder in there and cut the bl Censored dy thing off.

If I have to do this job again Im not going to waste a couple of weekends trying to pull it off. I'll just cut the thing off and it'll only take 10-15 minutes!! Thumbs Up

When I was chatting with Keith at Challenger he said they've yet to fail getting an arm off with a hydraulic puller - but they do take the box off to do it. I didn't bother and simply cut my old one off - I did try with plenty of penetrating fluid and a 'heavy' duty puller but that didn't even begin to touch it. Part of the trouble was getting the pullers to even get a grip on it.

Be careful as you may well cut into the splined shaft - although they're so thick they can take quite a beating.

Years ago the recommendation was to speak directly to Adwest who I think are based in Reading - when I looked in Christmas it looked like they'd been taken over by someone else. Ed

Right then, if I'm reading this right you lot ( more experienced in all things L/R) are saying it is a total Censored to get off and I get the distinct feeling that shelling out another £20 for a new arm and sending the old box back with arm is going to be a better option for my sanity..... Whistle after all I got shot of the L322 in favour of the Classic as all the ECU's were driving me nuts Shocked

While your here, I have noticed that there are a few peeps selling new nut and washer kits for said arm... is this necessary? I'm reasonably confident that the old one will come off, once it's been introduced to me DeWalt impact wrench.... and I do possess a 3 foot breaker bar if that fails Rolling Eyes RRC 2.4 TD... it's either a stretched 90 or shrunken 110!!

Are you referring to the nut and washer at the bottom of the spline? I.e. that holds on the arm? They're normally pretty trivial to undo although the lock washer should be replaced as it tends to get pretty mangled if used several times.

You might as well spend 15 minutes seeing if the arm will actually come off. But I wouldn't waste any more time on it, you never know someone may have had it off previously and it may just fall off... Laughing

With regards to impact vs. breaker bar my impact is usually much more successful - if I use a breaker bar I tend to shear things off my Milwaukee tends to break the seal of rust and then undo it. So far yet to find a nut it hasn't managed to undo, mind you it is rated to ~1600Nm Whistle Biggest problem is finding the space to use it! Ed

Well I've gone for the easy option... new arm and don't bother trying to remove it.... I'll just hold off ordering the steering box until tomorrow just incase someone says they are no good... Would be just my luck to jump now a get another horror story tonight Laughing

So Have You Used Steering Specialists Limited?

Never had the need to investigate power steering boxes.

However - and I can't believe I forgot this... Dad's been for several years now building adjustable power steering modules for rally cars. They're electric columns with then a knob on the dash to adjust the level of assistance you get. He suggested replacing the Defender's one so that we could remote control it for rabbit shooting - no idea whether he was serious or not Whistle Ed
