fine tuning.
Just thought I'd share this.

was driving along the M'way the other day thinking how great the engine was running etc.

running at circa 52-4 mph. external temp 13C, engine at a steady 87C. no sooner than I thought it was running a steady 87C it started to go up. only to 89C then back down to 83C and back to a steady 87C - I gave up watching after that but thought how great it was to be making such 'fine tuning' by itself and to relatively small tolerances Very Happy Thumbs Up

Interesting, the original thermostat is supposed to only start opening as of 88°C and is fully open as of 96°C.
The PEL500110 is supposed to open as of 82°C and is fully open as of 88°C.
That's why with the running temps quoted by you I thought you had made the change, same is I and many others here.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

hmm.

I have seen it go up to 90's (possibly 96/97C in circumstances where you'd be more likely see higher temps ie straight into traffic after working the engine a bit, but not the other day (I've seen this several times before) when just cruising along, it was more like a bit of 'fine tuning' and like I say I'm pretty sure it's the original.

It's just the thermostat doing it's job. Starts opening at 88ish degrees and allows the radiator to cool the engine which drops it back down again.
