Upgraded to LED light all over, as well as new shocks, tubular turrets, DAB radio & Antenna and so forth
![]() HOWEVER! A huge problem with the brake light has surfaced, it may have excisted for a while already, but only discovered this during my function test of all the lights. NO-brake light at all. Been trying "everything". Switch is OK, direct connection from live wire to the other wire with ignition on. No change, no light! Use a circuit tracer, to see if I could find anything, and traced it back to the green wire on the rear wiper?!! Anyone have any tips or ideas as to what could cause this? All other lights work perfectly, even the daylight lights on the brake light socket works.. Just no brake light. I checked the tow, and it works fine, no bad corrosion on the trailer connector behind rear wheel either.. Am I loosing my mind or what the #$(/# ![]() ![]() |

Sounds like there could be wiring error in the plug on the lights, or the plug on the vehicle.

Yes, something is not right, but what to check.... Not sure where the error is happening. The weird part is that it cleared the MOT 4 wks ago, and unless they "forgot" to check the brake light, it was working then. Not sure where I should check next..

Led lights only work one way so swap the live and earth over and try again Ray

Have you tried plugging the old lights in to eliminate faulty upgraded LED's?
If your getting brake lights at your tow plug I'd be suggesting the LED's are wired wrong. It was hard to pick up if the MOT was done after the LED upgrade was fitted or prior. This is where I'd be starting... .Swap the old lights in and test. If no brake lights with a test light or multi meter check... -power feed to the brake light switch (I'm thinking blown fuse here) -power from the brake light switch (I see you joined these wires for testing but was there power supplied with the ignition on?) If you're happy power is being supplied test... -power at the brake light plugs with the LED's disconnected, check all 3(2 side + high mount). -check there is a good earth supply at the same plugs. If all this tests OK the problem is in the LED units. I recently had an issue with an upgraded LED upgrade on a lorry at work. It was a combined park/running indicator unit. With runnining lights on we had no indicators but OK with them off. Turns out they had the indicator earthing via the running light circuit A quick swap of some plugs and it's all good. I suspect you have a blown fuse or a similar wiring issue with the LED's. Cheers, Kyle. Last edited by Alien on 27th Mar 2017 8:30pm. Edited 1 time in total |

The driving lights work perfectly, first thing I did, was to replace the LED with the old bulb-lights to rule out faulty lights. However the high mounted brake light does not work either. :/ |

If no high mount either double check the fuses.

Thank you very much for your reply: I have tried pretty much everything you suggest. Ref my answer in between your reply. I am going to check again tomorrow if the earth-point behind the rear wheel is good. I could not find it today when checking. But as I have been intensely studying the wiring diagrams, I find no other logical explanations to the weird "brake light to rear wiper" signal.. I used a circuit tracer, and ended up with a signal on the green wire that goes into the rear wiper.. Though no other issues. All lights on trailer works, indicators, running light and side marking lights... But no brake light... ![]() |

Thank you ![]() Yeah, quadruple checked (just wish I learned NOT to mount the fuse-cover each time ![]() |

Mmmm,
Fuse is OK and power to and from the switch. Nothing at the rear plug(x2) the high mount or trailer plug. My money is a broken wire. Have a close look at where the trailer plug wires joins the main harnes. It is possible the wire has broken at this join particularly if they have used scotch locks. Cheers, Kyle. |

Yeah, it may look like a broken wire, or wrong connection. I have checked the contact in the back of the rear wheel, where might I find the point where the main trailer harness breaks out from the main? It sounds like it might be there. A short would blow the fuse, but if the short somehow manage to direct its power thru to the rear wiper in this case..... uhmmm..

Hmm, have checked again with power from an external battery. Both led-"bulbs" works great, with the earth from the plug. In other words Polarity OK, bulbs or rather both functions of the LED works.
The issue is that putting power thru the brake-light-wire from the switch, activates green-wire on the rear wiper. Not sure if something happened when I removed the old antenna-cable, and mounted the dashboard. Perhaps I stripped wires or something. I just canīt understand why power on green-purple, will divert to a solid green wire on a completely different part.. ![]() ![]() |

FInally stopped snowing for a while! Its nice to troubleshoot in the daylight for a change!
Got my better half, to connect the live 12-volt cable, to find out what was starting in the back when connecting power to the cable. Turns out that I chose the live-feed instead of the direct cable to the brake lights. Which means I was feeding power thru the ignition, and started the dieselpump, not the rear wiper.. ![]() I chose the other cable, and... Nothing! Decided to also dismantle the high-mounted brake light to see if anything was... well.. whatever I could find that seemed out of place! Its as new inside, and probably the nicest piece of the car, absolutely spotless.. However I decided to swap the bulb with a LED bulb, and continue my search, when I notices light! ![]() All of a sudden the Land Rover gods have found that I have suffered enough, and granted me one wish. I see light, first just a small glow, then all of a sudden light.. Now I need to test it thru the switch.. Hope its stable, then decide whether I trust its a miracle or a fluke.. For now I am : ![]() |
