Yep, top film and the car definitely needs saving.

I'm working just outside San Francisco at the moment and last night a group of us went in to town specifically to walk down one of the streets in the car chase! I made the 'youngsters' watch it on YouTube before we went, great movie.

The engine sound during the chase is the sound of a Ford GT40, overdubbed onto the soundtrack, not the Mustang.
I know a couple of the guys who were in the GB team and rode against Mr McQueen in the ISDT, one of them, Roy Peplow, has given me copies of a few photo's from the era. After the event, Roy imported a few Bultaco enduro bikes into California for Steve and his buddies and I have a great photo of Roy with James Coburn, in cowboy clothes on a film set, trying a bike for size. Another one is a McQ publicity photo of Steve (in his iconic G9 Harrington) and is signed "to Roy and his pretty lady from your friend in the Colonies, Steve McQueen" My wife has them stashed somewhere, I'll dig them out later. |

I always understood the car to be Steve McQueen's own transport.

Pretty hard to beat that (I've walked a few of those streets!),...but maybe watching the best motor racing film ever made (IMHO) "LeMans" again with Steve, would come close. There was an absolutely brilliant dvd released a couple of years ago about the making of Lemans,..if ya're a McQueen fan, as I am, it's a must! Thanks for the clip, Pickles |
