Extended Wheel arches back to Standard
Hi all,
bought my landy with extended wheel arches attached, but they don't really work with the size wheels I've got. seeing as its going to be more expensive to change the wheels I've decided to change the arches back to standard. to the:

has anyone done something like this before and know how easy it can be done?
Cheers

From the pic it seems there is a greater arch cut out in the body panels than standard, so it seems sensible to measure and compare to standard one first... Cheers, Vincent

If the metalwork has been cut then it's going to be very difficult. The front outer wings are relatively easy to replace but the rear tub sides are much more involved. Darren

i don't really want to replace all of the body work, so i guess i may just have to get bigger tyres to fit the arches better.
if the body has not been cut is it simple just to remove and rivet the holes where the arches have been removed?

you could just put rivets in the holes and paint the heads body colour. Only a Defender enthusiast would notice they weren't standard.

^^^^

There will be holes left in the bodywork when you remove those horrible arches - why anyone fits them I don't know, they are hideous and wide wheels are only useful off road if you are on sand or soft ground...

Not sure whether bodywork needs to be cut away to fit them but guessing it might if the arches have been fitted to accommodate not only wider but also bigger diameter tyres - if they have then it won't just be the outer wings at the front that will need replacing but also the inner galvanised wing too I would imagine.

Refitting the standard wheel arches is fiddly but not too difficult providing the flanges on the bodywork with the holes in them are still all intact.

Good luck.

Have a look underneath. If the bodywork follows the line of the wide arches without a lip on the inside, then it's been cut. If the factory lip is still there, then you could get away with removing the wide arches and making good any extra holes. Darren

I think the old arches may have been cut back to allow the new ones to be fitted. If no old ones on then it leaves a gap in the wheel arch inside which unlikely as road spray would get into engine compartment. The new ones will have required holes to be drilled. I assume a pain to change/fill.

Get some wheels with more offset so they stick out more. You can then also change the stop bolts to increase your turning circle as a bonus. I have Challenger steel 5 spokes from 4x4 tyres. They are selling at £75 each. -25 offset.

You might need to invest in some chunkier tyres. Try eBay for part used or post on the wanted part of this site.

I get loads of dirt/mud/spray up the side of my landy and looking to go the other way and fit some wider arches.

there is still a lip on the inside, that looks factory, so does this indicate that it hasn't been cut? almost at a 90 degree angle to the body work?
cheers

Sounds like the bodywork is intact. I would try removing one of the wide arches and take a picture to show us but it sounds like you'll be able to fit standard ones back on *phew* Laughing 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I need wider arches and was looking at these to stop spray constantly on the sides of my 110. My mind is not made up about which ones. Anyone know if there are 1-2 inch wider more stock looking arches around for sale?

Help Urgent!!
Can anyone help me out here please really need it. so story goes that i bought this 90 as my first car, not really knowing much about defenders at the time, but now I'm more experienced I've had a look at many more vehicles that id like mine to look more like. at the moment it has these awful extended wheel arches, which make the wheels look weird and the body a bit off. I'm almost done with this little project, but this is the last thing i want to get sorted. so if anyone can recommend that as i want to change the arches would it be best to go with matte arches or the gloss ones
if anyone has any other advice it would be appreciated
cheers
George

I'd try taking those ones off first and see if what your left with will allow standard arches to be refitted. Ray

As above ! Some previous owner probably had large tires fitted and cut the arches as well as extending them Shocked
