First step put the nut back ON.
Leave it loose by about two turns. Use some penetrating oil. Tap the wheel upwards top, bottom, left right. Do it without nut on expect to get the steering wheel in your face if it comes off suddenly. Brendan |

I read the advice to loosen the nut but leave it on (so not to smack yourself in the face) the two feet on the floor and full like ¥$€#, it worked for me. Good luck James

I had to borrow a bearing puller to get mine off. After that I cleaned up the splines and put a little copperease on it to make it easier the next time. It was very slightly easier the second time, but still incredibly tight. Maybe mines was just a super good fit.

Well done, success indeed. I have the same set up, I see you didn't use the carbon centre ring with your new wheel. I wasn't going to bother either, but the wife thought it looked better with it, so I was over ruled. Like the look of yours though.

For me... the carbon was a bit flashy.

Possibly the only tight fitting splined interface found anywhere on a defender! |

All the splined connections from the steering wheel to the bottom end of the steering box are tight.... don't ask me how I know 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

It isn't the splines that make it tight, it is the taper behind them. Coupled of course with the fact that many people tighten the nut absurdly tight, for some reason! ("Oh, it's the steering wheel, it might come off! Better do the nut up as tight as I can!")

Same set up as me, I too left the carbon ring off
I also machined off the "Optimill" engraving for a cleaner look...... |
