SVX Fire & Ice Style Steps
Hi,

Looking for some advise on buying some side steps for my 90.

I like the look of the all black SVX fire & style steps, but have read some people complaining that they rust quickly?

I've found that Masai sell some steps which are more expensive but claim to be galvanised to help life span

Has anyone fitted similar and give advise on which to go for?

Many thanks

Ade

Yeah, seen them when doing my searches

My worry is I don't know what they are made of? Will they be prone to rust compared to the Masai galvanised ones?

Anyone got them fitted?

Thanks

Giving my late 2012 110 a decent clean at the weekend and seeing the terrible state of the bumper, side rail steps and the bumperettes (I fitted), I've decided I'm not going to bolt anything else on externally unless galvanised or stainless steel and then powder coated. Everything seems to just rot/corrode so quick Big Cry James

Masai states that the steps are zinc galvanised.

There are two main methods of depositing zinc on to mild steel for protection

Electro plating or zinc plating which is the cheaper method and uses an electrical current to deposit the zinc onto the mild steel a coating typically 5-30 microns

Hot dipped galvanisation is a process where the object is dipped into a molten bath of zinc and coats the object with 10 times the thickness of zinc that electro plating does. 50-150 micron thickness. The R + T sliders have to have holes drilled in them and zinc coats the inside of the R + T sliders in this process. Hot dipped galv can self heal to a certain extent.

Black powder coating on top of hot dipped galv has an orange peel surface appearance.

I would guess that Masai are referring to electro plating or zinc plating when they use the expression zinc galvanisation as galvanisation is zinc being deposited on steel.

If you do not want your 90 steps to rust then consider the stainless steel steps from Nakatanenga here

Just come across this little 'fact'

Quote:

It is estimated that corrosion costs economies around 4% of Gross Domestic Product.
Every 90 seconds, across the world, one tonne of steel turns to rust.
Of every two tonnes of steel produced, one tonne is made to replace one that has rusted.

If you have a local galvanisers and powder coaters then it wouldn't be too difficult to get some cheap ones and remove the plastic/rubber bits then have them coated.

The problem is with most of them the coating on them is very poor, even decent quality powder coating would make them last better. Then spray the insides with cavity wax.
