Very true, but if you've got the kit then why ignore one of its' big benefits? ![]()
In my experience, the suspension on small trailers don't compress that much, but it's academic anyway, as in my case it was already nose up on our regular caravan hitch setting. If you are looking at the adjustable hitch go for the larger slider as they offer more adjustment and have two pins although you can purchase extra pins for the small slider. As has been said the smaller one does rattle with a single pin and the trailer pitches up and down even though it s small amount you can feel it and hear it. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to ![]() Richard |

I can't remember, if I'm honest, as it was two Land Rovers ago and we now use a D4 for towing it. It's van-specific though, so may be different for you anyway. Ours is a twin axle and so is towed slightly more level than single axle ones, which means the hitch benefits from being slightly higher. i wonder why they don't sell the whole kit in either one pin or two pin versions?

Dunno. The kit as it stands has been around since '98 and in slightly different versions since long before then. Two pin sliders are relatively recent by comparison. Perhaps it's just not a big enough volume seller to warrant changing the kit. Darren

Finally remembered to do this.
In the middle holes on the tow bracket - from the ground to the centre of my tow ball is 530mm. I can move the towball up or down by one set of holes, which would give a difference of about 45mm up or 45mm down. Bear in mind i have a pin and ball type hitch, which does make the ball sit slightly higher than a plain tow ball. Ifor Williams specify a towball height of between 485 and 535mm, so the bottom and middle holes are more or less spot on for that range. Here's quite a good explainer for recommended tow ball heights. https://www.pfjones.co.uk/towball-heights.html |

Ok, I've picked up the tow bar kit, I went for the Dixon Bate adjustable in the end, I got it from Island 4x4 in Maidstone £99 +vat and the electrics kit is on its way from PF Jones £89 all in including postage.
So now the question is does anyone have any tips or observations for fitting it? I'm thinking of a liberal dose of acf50 but would you smear something between the surfaces to keep the water out? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. Grease, dinitrol or waxoyl between the surfaces will do. You can download the Land Rover fitting instructions from topix. But it's all pretty easy.
Island 4x4, great unless you need to return something or get in touch with them - then it's a total nightmare. |
